E30 odo repair or replacement

[Another Newbie at BMW]

Recently bought '84 320i in very good nick - only problem is odometer gears of VDO cluster is broken. I can get the gears (R960 delivered), but do not think I will capable of doing the replacement. Other option I assume is get 2nd hand cluster - but with the older gears being prone to crumbling, I see this as risk - how long will it last?

Any experiences out there, or competent guys in Cape Town area able assist?

I replaced the gears in the cluster on my 325i. Not a big job...
