I'm going to keep my options open, ideally i would like to buy a decent car even if i need to spent about 5k getting it right,i still wanna have some change to put in the bank for future use.

so at the moment my list comprises of
-E36 320/325/328
-Ballade Vtec
-Rxi
-Velo/Life/Rox
-mk3 or Jetta VR6....

Thanks for all the help guys!:praise:

LOL, out of that list, you have the best chance of finding a clean E36 as the others have all probably been raped to death, and please oh please, don't buy a CitiGolf. For your own safety, it's probably better you driving a 6cyl RWD car.

Lmfao:roflol::bravo:

Thats a good 1 but until the age of about 14.All i knew was a citi.I'm surrounded by them whether it be family or friends. My first boost experience was a ride in a 16vT and i was blown away...i can only imagine how a boosted Bm goes:fencelook:

I would keep at least 10k in the bank to fix the car no matter what you get...
if the car looks clean it does not mean there might not be something major to fix...

If your budget is 55k and you have nothing left over then budget 45k for a car and keep the rest aside. Why don't you get some insurance quotes in the meantime to get an idea of what to expect. You should at least have 3rd party insurance, because you never know when your car might come into contact with a Porsche. Insurance is going to be heavy given your age and the cars that you're considering. Are you working or studying? Reason I ask is because you might not be able to get insurance without some sort of proof of income, unless you have it insured under your parents name and have you listed as the regular driver. I would hold off on the performance mods for a few years as this will also have an effect on your insurance.

Lastly get something that you're happy with and don't worry about what everyone else wants you to buy. If I did that I wouldn't have bought my bm, so I'm glad I didn't listen to everyone else. The cars you're looking at demand respect for your and other road users safety, so that's just something that I think you should keep in mind when buying a car with lots of power.

The plan was to put the car on my mothers name until i finish school as i work part time at the moment. She works at Standard bank and they get special rates and benefits.

Choosing a car started off as a simple task but then my budget opened up abit.I was suppose to buy a neat Mini but it fell through so i saved and saved. Then it went to golf but every second person has 1 and insurance on those cars are through the roof. The reason why I'm looking at the cars i listed is because i plan on keeping my first car and building it into a drag/weekend toy.

The Bms look like good options to me because they stylish, powerful and reliable if maintained properly.

The other cars caught my eye because of there looks and performance even though that shouldn't be what i should be looking at.

I don't travel alot.Just to school and back and I'll go out on Friday and saturday nights.Theres just so much to consider that i had not thought of before. If i had this Money a year or 2 ago i probably would have tried to find the fastest car i could without considering the important factors,

Just go with you gut and what YOU want, I remember when looking at my first BM, everyone told me I was making a mistake and that they are expensive, but this is not true.

My 2000 318i is still going strong and over 230000KM on the clock, I love that car, and because it was my first car I bought myself I will NEVER sell it, also want to turn it into a toy.

If you really want a BM, then go for it! After driving my first I could never get my self to buy another make car, I have 3 in total and couldn't be happier, I also was where you are right now just about 5 years ago.

I would however suggest, go for BM, but buy a e46, the more reliable and safe version and take it in 6cyl, you get used to the power withing a week or so.
My mom had the velociti 1.6i, that was also a lekker car, really fast stock, but it's nothing compared to the BM, just basically tin on wheels.

Go have a test drive in each one of the cars you are looking at, that might change your mind, but just remember, BM's aren't as expensive that everyone is making them out to be.

Also keep insurance in mind, not easy to get insurance for a 325i (or any BMW for that matter if you are 18) that is if you are worried about this.

Something else to keep in mind is that it is a BMW it will be more expensive to maintain, so you need to be very happy with what you get and not do it for badge snobbery, else there is a good chance you will end up hating the car.

It has been said, but keep safety in mind as well, the e36 is not a very safe car (still better than most other cheap cars) and it is not known to have a very forgiving chassis setup, so you will have to be careful with the car (speaking just for myself, if my first car was a 325i I would probably have killed myself with it)

Other than this if you find a good one you will have yourself one epic machine.

Agreed! I almost killed myself a few times, insurance is not that bad I paid R1250 for my car when I was 18 now I’m 21 and it’s R750 with Regent

Who you insured with? My insurance is just under R5K? the cheapest insurance on 1 of the car is R1300 a month, and that's the 318i, and I have never been in an accident.
