E30 Aircon query

Good day all,
I have come across an '88 E30 325 coupe for sale which I am keen on purchasing. it is a 1 owner vehicle, in pristine condition, with a Schnitzer stage 1 done.:praise:
My queries are as follows:
The owner has not used the aircon for about 20 tears, he doesn't believe in it, says that's what windows are for!!! The result is that it no longer cools.
1. Will the system need overhauling, or will I get away with a re-gas?
2. Will the change from R12 to the newer gas require any mods?
Any input will be greatly appreciated as this issue will naturally affect the purchase price of the vehicle.
Many thanks.

The aircon should be your last question!
The rarity of a 1 owner, pristine E30 should make it a done deal.
Budget R3000 to get the aircon working again...

Oh, we want pics please :)

Disaster has struck, my minister of domestic affairs has vetoed the purchase.:YesNo:
Many thanks for the advice, the car is in with an air con guy, has a leak. He is going to fix and re-gas, with the old R12 gas.
So, if anyone is keen, There is an E30 325 coupe available, '88 model reg. Jan 89, 1 owner, 210k on the clock. Red with black pin stripe, interior all fresh, door panels re-done in leather together with the seats. everything now working and Schnitzler stage 1 fitted by J&S. asking R 90k neg.

I will arrange for pics once it is back from the garage, then post a proper for sale post.

Is that a good price for an E30 325 coup? , Im just curious , I dont mean to offend anyone , Even though it is one owner, (does that really effect its price that much?)

Again I dont mean to offend anyone , I find a car that's had work like that done to it,Seats and door cards have been redone so its not original anymore (very hard to find original door cards in good condition., engine modifications etc isn't as original anymore and looses value. I have seen original cars commanding higher values but not ones that have had work done like this.

Also I feel that someone who cares for his car , whether they use the aircon or not will keep everything in running order, that thing about that's what windows are for is nonsense I feel, And for that price shouldn't everything work? I would hate to think of what else he believes the car didn't need so he hasn't fixed it.

I would think maybe a 100% unmodified original E30 325 with lower mileage and everything working for R90 000 would be around or little less then R90 000, but more attractive for a collector. A few yeas back there was a 316i with around 56000 kms , that sold for 89 000 , The car was Immaculate , it was like a moving time peace .

Unless are E30s really starting to climb that high in value these days.

What does the Schnitzer stage 1 entail?

If the car indeed has that kays, is one owner & was well cared for, then trust me, that car would not have needed a recover of the seats or door panels.

Something seems off?

Would love to see some pics of it just out of curiosity

I have to also agree with E30 freak,
With that much mileage , the seats and door pads should still be in good condition, something seems off. My E30 has well over that mileage and hasn't needed it's seats or doorpads recovered, one seat does have an issue though ( drivers seat), Would be nice if we had pictures of the car to view, I'm always curious about high cost E30s.

The problem with such a car is that you can't use it as a daily driver with a clear conscience. Sure, the car can take it. The problem is that you will wear out hard-to-replace things and destroy its value if you add a lot miles on the clock. :RedNo:

Like what?

e30s are meant to munch miles

And everything is still available really cheap compared to any other BMW

For the past month I have been trying to break that gutless M20B23 and it is still going just as well at 360 000km.

I only managed to waste fuel and burn a little oil in the process

What I am trying to say is that if you spend R90K on a good E30, you are buying a collector's item. If you want a daily driver, there are more modern BMWs available for that sort of money. You can get an absolute mint E39 or E46 and have a lot of cash left in the piggy bank to fix it up for when (not if) it breaks.

Have pics, can't get them to up load. The air conditioning eventually cost R11,300 to fix, a total re con.

Finally got the pics to upload. Spoke to the owner, he says he will split the cost of the aircon repair, so now asking R95k. See F.S. Post
