Easiest way to check the head gasket is to remove the oil cap and see if it looks milky in colour. If it is then the gasket has gone...
Not always a full proof method. As I mentioned before on my 2 cars, there were no signs of milkness in the oil at all. If the headgasket cracks across the coolant to exhaust passage, you wont get any signs in the oil and only minor oil spotting in the coolant...The only signs will be excessive pressure and a loss of coolant...
Also, if a car has stood for a while and only been driven every few months, you will get the same milky effect in the oil because the moisture will form in the cold engine and as it heats up, the condensation will mix with the oil. This happens all the time, everytime you start your car, but the normal temp of the oil is enough to burn off the moisture so that it does not cause problems...

Made some progress today. She is sounding much better! Gizmo was right, one of the tappets was way off. Idiots had stripped the bolt holding the eccentric thingy to adjust...so it was loose as anything. Ontop of that, we found that one of the cylinders wasn't firing at all. Corrected all the gaps and plugged up a few vacuum problems, she will now start first time but idle very high. The reason for the high idle is the air slide valve is not connected. Still trying to find a picture of an engine like mine that hasn't been messed with so i can see how certain things are connected.

The two rockers circled in red are also way to far to the right, and that HT lead with the white electrical tape was not working at all.

Two videos. No more weird milky stuff coming out the exhaust either.

The engine oil is quite low as all of it is leaking out the tappet cover :)

Once i get a new gasket and the rest of the bolts the PO didn't put back...it should sound better. :excited:

From the sounds of it, those bolts might be inside the engine :) I cant wait to hear her when she's all fixed :)

Glad you guys approve. :)

Not going to say how much yet as i haven't paid the guy. :pimp:

Going to have to sort out some hefty spacers for these to fit as they are E36 offset.
