Interesting though.... Mike's father isn't the only person who chose a Merc over a BMW. Some where in 2010 my friends father did the same, and so did my uncle and they all had the same things to say as Mike pointed out.

But if you talking value for money why not include a Honda Accord :fencelook:

At the end of the day I like a bargain, so it is natural for me to go for the Audi because its still a prestige car, has awesome quality and finishes and its probably got the best resale out of them all too.

Introducing the Japs or China's into this discussion will simply wipe the 320i clean. There is no denying those cars offer amazing features and value.

However, if we compare "apples with apples" in terms of German Car Saloons the F30 had better be something good.

Prospect and Mike, do us all a favour and please read the thread. All your questions are answered in earlier posts.

Mate, do us a favour and go with it. If this thread upsets you, then dont read it. Like with all discussions there are various opinions and beliefs that must be taken into consideration. There is no need for you to throw your toys out the cot because question the car you drive.

Mike – I am not throwing my toys out of my cot or anything, I am asking yu simply read the thread, hence there is so many pages, you could gather a better idea of what you are asking. I think you should actually relax yourself a bit cause maybe your emotional state caused you to think i was upset but anyway, to be really honest, you could think of my car as a POS, but it suites me quite perfectly. Being able to afford a much more expensive sports car, I stil chose the 320i over cause its for my family’s future use as in my planned family and I would rather pay the little price (where I picked mine up with 30k on the clock and all extras for R240k second hand) and this helped cause my budget is still healthy and I still got a car that caters well with a huge boot, cruises nicely, not a bullet by far but its cool. I love to have a sports car but I am now required to look for value in a sedan which also will allow me to have a cheap insurance.

And the funny thing is jackals323i had repeated his sentiments almost 3 times in this thread and now you have seemed to agree with him, whereas if you just read through the thread, you wouldn’t have even needed to have had the whole discussion AGAIN. I understand you guys want answers to things that you are curious about but the threads are here and sometimes easier to read it and get the answers, that was my point above.

Anyway, 320i to 323i to 335i, it depends solely on the individual, his/her needs and wants, all vehicle purchases boil down to that. and I am proud of the 320i being the car that it is, it is much better and comes with a lot more features than other cars in its class and segment that I was looking at, at the time of purchase.

Now as a lot more people have said as well, lock this thread and move on. I don’t care what people still want to say or whatever, but the reason our club’s growth with be staggered is cause of threads like this, I said this before in another thread and will say it again.

Enjoy the holidays guys and drive safe!

I don't understand why some feel the need to call the E90 320i a POS. If you're used to driving a 330i/d and you then step into a 320 it will naturally feel super slow and underpowered, but that's no reason to rant and rave about it. You don't see me calling all 318i's a POS whenever I step out of my 540 and into my 318. You can't expect to drive a 320 like you drive your 3.0L I6 and then be surprised that you dislike it :shakehead:

Airing your opinion and insulting someone lies on opposite sides of the line.

As I said before, the ONLY car forum where the yuppies in there non-320i BMW's look down on a car of the very brand they claim to be fanatics of:thumbdo:

I cannot see why people are trying to bash the E90 320i when most of them will give their right ball to own a good looking new model.
Also look at price when you buy according to Car magazine etc. (Some good salesman will sell you a Mini for R380 000)
The 320i is also the only one not using a turbo or a supercharger to the cars being compared.
I have taken the following figures from the May 2011 Car magazine. (Sorry do not buy it every month) All are manual transmissions. All are turbo ed or supercharged except the BMW (even the Mini)
Categories - Price ; 0-100; Top speed; Kw; Torque

BMW 320i m 336801 8.4 225 115/6400 200/3600

Audi A4 2.0T Ambition 344255 8.3 236 132/4000 320/1500

Audi A4 2.0 TDI Ambition 361830 9.4 230 125/4200 350/1750

M B C200 CGI Blue Efficiency 370140 8.2 237 135/5500 270/2800

M B C220 CDI Blue Efficiency 398250 8.5 230 125/3000 400/1400

Mini Cooper S 290723 8.07 228 135/5500 240/1600

With the BMW the cheapest of the family German saloons it can be compared to cars in its price or cars without induction.
As the weakest link price wise and performance wise it still compares well to the others.
Do not let the Kw and torque fool you. It does not always count. My old 328i M could stay on the highveld on top speed with a Chev Lumina SS developing double the horses and more than double the cylinder capacity.

Last year I was willing to trade my 325 for a E90 320i, it was black, exclusive package, sunroof, parking sensors, rain sensors, the whole shabang.
All the paperwork was done and at the end I cancelled the deal.
I was happy with the way the car drove, but obviously there was a big problem for me in the performance area of the car, but I was willing to look past all that for the following fact:
1. Was a 2009 model, my E46 is a 2003
2. Had 17k km on, my car at that moment hat about 97k km.
3. Motorplan till 2014, extendible to 2016, my car motorplan expired.
So it was purely for me about the perks I would get compared to my car.

a 320i is in actual fact not that slow... yes you jump from a 330i or d to a 320i and yes you will notice the difference... from that perspective it's big but get use to diving the 320i and it's seriously not that bad...

Still BMW and still a excellent car to drive.... it can do it's 200+ which is in any case illegal so why worry ?

my 2c.... sorry

Jees Guys is this thread still around

All I wanted out of this is to talk about the 320i in a constructive way and it got so personal I just stopped posting

Anyway the issue has been resolved in the new F30 320i

After three days with the Ultimate Driving Donkey Machine, the 320i, I can't help but look forward to returning it tomorrow. Talk about laughable performance! This car makes me angry :argh:

That's because you're expecting 330d performance from it and driving it as such. I don't experience the same when I get out my 540 and into my 318 as I drive each differently and I know what to expect from each. It's just plain logic. If you hate the 320 because you're used to more power, then it's simply your own fault for expecting the 320 to be anything like your 330d.

There's nothing wrong with the car... the problem is you.
