DME: MISFIRE, CYLINDER 2

Hi Guys,

I started my 325i this morning and it sounded a little "off", anyway I drove to work and can hear she is not idling well. It sounds like a M5 or C63 but moves like a 1100. The idle is very rough, similar to when you wash your engine and there is water in the spark plugs (old cars).

I ran the Rheingold and it gave this error:

DME: MISFIRE, CYLINDER 2

There are no warning lights or error lights on the cluster/Dash.

Does this mean my plug or coil could be fried on cylinder 2 ?

Thoughts?

Thanks

It is possible yes, try and get a loaner coil and replace it, then clear the codes and fire it up and see if it changes.
If not change the plug.

Swap the coil from cyclinder 2 with another coil and see if the miss fire moves.

If it does then it the coil, if not then its the plug

Thanks sir,

I dont really have a loaner, but maybe if I swop 2 and 3 to see if the error moved from 2 to 3.
Any idea on the cost of these coils?

I can almost guarantee you that you need to replace the coil pack on cylinder 2. Common issue with BMW.

Could be plugs or coil do what akash said sell the coil and see if error follows the coil. I paid about 500 or 450 i think for a coil at goldwagen

Out of interest NAS, what is the GW quality on the Coilpacks for the BMW? do they last well, or is this the case of cheaper and not lasting long?

Coil is my guess. Very common problem. Car runs rough and shakes hard on idle. Like the guys said above, move coil to other cylinder and see if error follows. Easy to change and probably worth keeping a spare in the car for when the next 1 goes

The 1st time I bought a coil pack it was Bosch the 2nd coil I bought was a bremi or something the bremi brand did feel better quality and was a steel design. So far they are working fine I plan to replace the other 4 soon.

Check with Bosch Diesel Electric in Wynberg JHB.

They quoted me R369 per a coil earlier this year for my N54.

I hope its not injector... R5000....

Highly unlikely to be an injector on an N52.

But start with the simple and cheaper solutions first.

First swap the coil from one cylinder to another
Check if the misfire follows the coil
if it does replace the coil
if not replace the plug.

If it is the coil, i would suggest replacing them all in one go or do one or two a month.

Injector will give a different error code than Misfire Cylinder x. Injector will give a "Smooth Running Regulation" error, then you need to run the "smooth running test" to get to the injector parameters.

I unplugged and moved coils around and it looks like I AM running on 4 cylinders. 2 are not firing and unplugging them while the engine is running has no effect. Will check diesel electric tomorrow or gw.

I further went through the BMW manual and the manual says that to test a coil, test terminals 1 and 15 on the actual coil with a ohm meter and expect 0.8 ohms.

I did find the 8ohms on the faulty coils - both of them, so I am not sure how accurate that testing is.

Anyway, I attached a pic of the table and also which cylinder is 1-6 for reference, looked for it for my own satisfaction :=): .
