DIY e90 bumper replacement

hey guys,

a couple of weeks ago my dad knocked the bumper in his 320i on a curb. He got 2 quotes to replace the bumper, one was R6000 and the other just under 9 thousand.

So, I thought I would do it and see what it costs me. I bought a new bumper from bmw for about R3000, and matched paint at a place I trust and painted it in my garage at home.

This is the final result, cost roughly R3700(trying to calculate the cost of 50ml of thinners:=): )

Ill take a better picture tomorrow, the flash at night makes it look matte, witch its certainly not.

Regards
Jacques

There better be a full write-up to follow, or else.... :)
Lol, do you mean like a step-by-step how-to? I got back today after dark so I don't have better pictures yet.

What I did was as follows:
The bumper comes from BMW primed(good thing, as primer and some plastics clash), I sanded it down with 600 grit just to scuff it for paint adhesion, I then followed with 3 coats of paint, let it dry overnight, sanded it flat with 600 grit, being very careful not to sand through on the edges. Then I painted another 3 coats and let it dry overnight.

I then sanded it down with 2000 grit without a block(it gives a slight orange peel like it comes from the factory, if you want, you can get a perfectly flat finish using a block) Then polished the sanding marks out with Meguiars rubbing compound, and finished off with their gold class polish. I have not waxed it yet as the paint still needs to dry for about a week before its all done.

Its not that hard, just a bit time consuming. Anything can be done if you try hard enough. I guess I can do small paint jobs like this for any fanatics if they like. mail me if u like.

Does that help Sankekur?

The only thing getting me down about home spray jobs is the damn sanding. uurghh.... If a sander cant do my sanding, I ain't interested :)
