Wanting to upgrade the existing system in the car. What are my options. Don't want massive bass boxes in the boot. Perhaps replacing factory speakers witgmore powerful ones. Has this been done.

Not sure if they do an Alpine upgrade.H Kardon is the upgrade.
I believe mines the Loudspeaker System - BMW Professional - This is (I think) just a speaker upgrade which takes you from base 6 speaker system to a 10 speaker system.

What do you consider powerful?

Do you have an oem amp?
If not then you will need one. If you want discreet then get a four channel amp about 70rms per channel. get a high end split system and a 10" sub. Consider dls, mbq, focal, rf(for power), even jbl for splits. Remove rear speakers for the bass to get into the cabin.

Whats your budget?

Get a Rockford Fosgate P450.4 amp or similar. Replace all existing speakers with MB Quartz splits and mids. Fit 2x 8inch Rockford Fosgate subs in a bandpass enclosure and cut a small hole in the metal behind the rear folding armrest to allow for bass to come into the cabin! Whenever u want more bass, fold the armrest down. Done that with our ex e46 318i individual and our current one (except it has 2 x 12inch RF subs) and best sound quality with no rattles etc. Clarity is just awsome. Was done by Image Audio Umhlanga in Durban. Also important to note- no motorplan issues was had with either of the cars.
