Depreciation Value of Beemers VS Merc etc.

This topic I’m sure “is al holrug gery”. Is there any significant truth in this that beemers depreciate faster than e.g. the Merc. This doesn’t make sense as the quality of both cars I would think is more or less the same. And !!! what is this issue of a C180 Kompressor running with a 1.6 motor and still priced in the range of the 320. Is that the case??? Beemer for me all the way.

Its a mental thing.

Bmw's are driven by enthusiasts, or "loonatics",
Mercs are driven by gentleman.

THose old classic jokes between merc and beemer drivers, so even though the quality is considered similar, the perception is that the beemer has had the crap driven out of it, the merc doesnt, true or false..

But dont be fooled, pay 350k for a new C180, in 3 months time its worth 280, then the price starts stabalizing, BMW looses value quicker up front...

THis is just my view on the matter, no true reflection of fact

I completely agree, but coming from the motortrade i can assure you that BMW's and Merc's are in two diffrent classes.
1)BMW reliabillety is 10 times better, only had four BM motors failling due to driver errors e.g. NO COOLANT, USING OIL ADDITIVES AND NO OIL IN THE SUMP.
BMW drivers are "windgat" only because they can afford to be, a hi performance, luxury, safe and image boosting vehicle.

Merc on the other hand have to build a AMG that cost more than we all earn in a year all together, to give the driver the same type of reassurance.
Merc engines rebuilded = about seven so far with a 380 have been a record breaker with only 369,000kms on the clock.

My own BMW E36 328 clock was reading 625,000kms when i sold her.No noisy timming chain or piston slap.She only asked for 6 injectors

My mates dad has a merc, that hasnt engine rebuilds or major work, that has 930k km on the clock, pretty impressive i think. But on average, BMW engines last longer.

I have heard that both makes have a huge innitial drop in value but then stabilize over time, where as other cars just get cheaper the older they get. Looking around on Autotrader though, it seems you can get a lot more BMW for your money than Mercedes.

Well, as an Ex Merc driver, I loved my C270 CDI, 500Nm on that light body, went like the clappers... but it missed something, something I have in both my BMW's..

Also, Audi keeps no resale value because they do serious cosmetic changes to it way too often, you 3 year old is already a major shape behind and your 5 year old is 2 shapes behind, and Audi wont stand by their trade in.

Beemer all the way! I'm into my second BMW (hopefully of many) now and can say even my previous one, an E36 318i regularly turned heads just with crystal lights added. Just didn't get much moola when i sold it, had a lot of wear and tear > My fault.

So ja, that's me, BMW all the way!

wow, 625,000 is quite good. my 318 reached 300 000 and had the damn water pump fail and blew my head, had to redo the whole engine since. other than that, its normal stuff, services, etc.

Mine was at 311 000 when I sold her, but nothing major (in fact nothing at all) needed to be replaced in the 5 years that I had her. Good car, very reliable, the day I sold her the owner drove to JHB straight away and is still happy :wave:
