Definitive Tuning Dyno Day | 3rd March 2012

Phew, well guys what an excellent day that was!

First and foremost, thank you to the Fanatics that joined us today - Some to Dyno their beasts and others just to partake in the event.

For our first ever Dyno Day I reckon we did well with 69 cars Dyno'ed and many many more present and enjoying fresh coffee and Boerewors Rolls as well as chilled tunes presented by Unique Sound.

I think the event went smoothly and I was extremely impressed with Dyno Tech for their excellent service and willingness to get all the cars through.

A special congratulations | Definitive Tuned BMW E90 320D

Well done to Lee, who had his car tuned with Definitive Tuning and promotec. Your 320D is an absolute beaut churning out 148.8Kw & 426Nm with just a de-DPF and promotec software.

The Final Results | Power | Performance | Joy | Definitive Services

With a total of 11466.7kw and 21907Nm worth of power and torque, this event sure allowed the those that took part from all various clubs and manufacturers to really show off their cars.

Attached is a PDF with all the figures for you to drool over.

Well done particularly to Jeanre making 112.2kw with his E30 325i, Zane with his E36 328i making 161kw and the two earth shattering 335i's making a whopping 583Nm & 578Nm Torque respectively.

It was also excellent to see Grants epic 130i on the road again and the noise from the E46 330i with its Van Der Linde Branches was absolutelly stunning.

So many highlights I cannot even begin to start listing them. :joy:

Finally, thank you Max for the pictures and videos and for Mo's friend for taking pictures and videos too.

So, when is the next one?!

Mike

Hi all just sorted by power by adding the KW and Torque then dividing by two to average, then the second TAB is by manufacture.

Well done guys. Was a good event! Just a question, i noticed my 130i made 181kw and 280nm...thats a bit off the 195kw and 315nm claimed as stock figures? My car is 100% stock. I would have expected atleast 300nm. Are the common problems on the 130i causing them to lose power?

no two dynos read the same.

manufacturer claims are also run on engine, not chassis, dynos

Furthermore to kabal's post above....

The correction factor for temperature and air density also plays a roll.
Normal ambient temperature for "factory values" is 20°C in a temperature controlled environment with virtually static 1014 hPa (mbar) pressure which reflects sea level NN.
This is not possible at such a dyno run! If one wanted to do it as per ISO and DIN standard MiniMike would have never been able to help a total of 69 cars to get tested!

Such a run reflects the true power at that day, time and place as if you'd diced another car.
Both cars would have same conditions and not factory conditions as per claim in a brochure.

This was a true figure comparison of real life situation testing.
Everyone should be happy with their figures and not cry at all

PS
Has anybody actually checked temperature and air pressure?

I noticed that the 3.0 Litre motors were struggling a bit.

However I found the Dyno quite accurate as the Smart made its factory specs and most of the people there said they got results which were expected and in line with their expectations.

Chris, how is your BMW driving? I hope it isnt anything serious. :thumbdo:

Very well explained by Kabal and Promotec. What further explanation do you need?

The dynos used in the BMW factory are many and are operating in near perfect conditions. Its the last stop in the manufacturing plant before the brand new car leaves the factory. It is almost like a "holy grail" the final check point that gets the stamp of approval. Not all the cars going through that check point delivers exactly the same numbers. But the ultimate measurement would be "consistency" as an indicator that the batch of cars that have gone through are healthy and meeting manufacturers minimum standards. Sure, on the dyno they check many variables and many stats are displayed which are not really relevant for a car that lives on the road.

Now that average dyno figure becomes the manufacturers measurement. You will often find that car magazines report often higher or lower figures compared to the factory specs of brand new cars because obviously the testing dyno conditions are different and happens in a real life setup and it is not intended to gauge the average "health" of a batch of cars coming off the factory belt.

People are only happy when they read big numbers on a dyno sheet but that is not the only thing you should look at. The dyno graphs will also help explain the "story". A JB4 335 delivered big numbers on the dyno yesterday but i was not happy with the rapid drop in TQ from 4000rpms...anyway we suspect heatsoak and the OEM intake etc...all this will assist us with further tuning the car.

Thats my 2cents

Yes Twinz.... drivabilty is the keyword and not top figures
Best example here is "The Mo's" 330i with its super smooth curve with all dipps taken out!
Verbal feedback was like "She's pulling strong and respnds very well" yet he seems a bit disappointed by the dyno results which again confirms: numbers are not everything!

Can we make a dyno printout thread? It would be nice to be able to compare. Then over time we can have sections like sealevel and up there, sorted by dynos.

But this is mikes thread and it was an awesomr day! Again, loved the atmosphere and chating to the guys. It was a great success!

The way i see dynos, its more of a tuning tool than anything else. Its a tool to see changes, something to compare the shapes of the curves more than numbers.

Thanx for the shoutout mike. Its so cool to hear the car from the outside for a change, thanx for the opertunity.

Hehe thanks Mike. I checked all the figures you printed and realized i was doing the same numbers as the Citi Golfs :flyfun: But car feels okay now. I noticed coming off the dyno it struggled a bit so maybe it freaked out and went into "limp" or something.

Noticed the guys had to tie my car down differently. My bumper clips broke so they couldnt find the hole to fit the tow hook and tie it down. Not sure if that would make a difference but i will take it to zeemax for a check up. Run their dyno and if all goes well i would love to bring it back for a proper run at Dynotech!

Thanks very much for a awesome day Mike!

The dyno is accurate, trust me i have had 4 previous cars there all ran factory spec kw.

Hence my question why my 130i is a bit low on power?

Looks like you guys have a jol! Sorry I missed it, I'm dying to put the M5 on the dyno, at least I know where to go now :)

M5 needs oil, and possibly new Vanos seals :argh:

Do you have your previous graphs still? Check the ambient correction.

Ambient was -5% on the others, with the beemer it was -1%.

But i see the rs4 also seems a bit down on power? maybe its not 100% accurate for the NA guys?

Thanks Mike for a great event.

Good turnout and I was happy with my results.. just a pity I had to leave early.
