No that won't work.

You need an electronic devce that provides a 0.45 voltage.

PM me if you don't come right, will make one for you.

The device then provides 0.45V on the signal line ie replace the lambda probe with some thing that generates a constant voltage of 0.45V back to the DME (on the lambda probe's signal lines), like a simple voltage divider or maybe voltage regulator?

Damn I love these forums, I'm just constantly learning new things, or new things about new things, about new things.

@MSM - thanks for setting me straight. I suppose I've been sitting on some international forums, and that seems to be the general opinion about exhaust jobs on Bimmers. So this is probably since they have the less restrictive cats, but they still have cats.

Does anyone in the CT area have a decatted 330i? I would love to hear it sometime. Or anyone in Joburg with a video camera or a pretty good cellphone mic.

On that topic, if anybody has locally available systems, ie Viper, TNT, Wildcat, Powerpipes, etc - PLEASE record us a few revs. Everything on youtube is the really expensive import stuff, as far as I can find.

Argue/inform forth gentlemen!

My two cents, and a few points.

I gather from the USA forums that BMW tend to have much larger than normal cats to reduce restriction problems.

The lifespan of a cat is not much over 100000Km, much less here in SA.

My 540i cats died, removed them and the power gain was quite significant. I did not expect this from the above.

Fuel in SA is real sulphur contaminated crap. Every cat equiped car I drive behind stinks of sulphur dioxide. (Rotten egg smell, and a highly toxic gas. Basically the lousy fuel killing the cat by contaminating it with sulphur) Catalytic converters are very clever devices, but are very susceptible to contamination by lead, LRP, silicone, antifreze and any non perfect fuel. I would take a guess that in SA if your car has more than 80000Km on, the odds are your cat is probably past it's usefull life anyway.

LRP kills cats (Only a tank or two of LRP with MMT contaminates the cat with Manganese rendering it useless forever)

Cats cannot be cleaned by taking the car for a hard drive at high speed, this is a total myth. If it's dirty it's dirty forever.

On an OBD II car (post 98) a bad cat will give a check engine light and the owner will probably try to replace a post cat O2 sensor for nothing instead.

You can remove cats on an OBDII car, but you will need an O2 sensor fooler. OBDII cars have a second O2 sensor after the cat that monitors the quality of the gas coming out of the cat to check whether it's working.

Cats can be removed easily on an OBD I car (pre 98 with no check engine light) with no problems.

The only way to tell a blocked cat is to measure the pressure upstream.

Using unleaded without a cat emits more poison into the atmosphere than the old leaded fuel.

I do not like cats at all, it is a concept that has merit in places like California and parts of Europe, here in SA we have too few cars to fully justify their use. I think cats are just a big $ making and window dressing scheme here.

With where the sensors on my E39 is, should it not be a good idea to de-cat anyway?

i got my decat done yesteday, only removed the middle 2 cats. immediate change in response especially mid range, fuel consumption dropped immediately even after pushing it. i would def recommend it. very slight change in tone, a bit more deeper than standard.

mcompact ... where did you get it done and how much did it cost? Did you replace the 2 cats with silencers or straight pipe... Thanks

how can this be so difficult to understand guys?

a cat is a restriction and removing it will gain power, end of story. in order to make the ecu think the cat is still there, it has to be fooled into thinking it is still there.

:dunno:

It isn't usually that simple... From what I remember, there is a certain amount of back pressure needed for an optimal amount of power to be made. As suggested, by Rick540 (i think) the cats are bigger allowing less of a restriction. Yes, cats are mainly there for emissions, but bmw would've developed them to work well. :thumb:

Thanks mcompact ... will check them out soon and get mine done.

When you say deeper sound, would that be a closer sound to the 330i or totally different with more a aftermarket deep zorst sound?

Hi guys, your knowledge is amazing.I have a 318i auto touring 02 and I would like to decat but I am not sure how to go about it.An exhaust guy gave me a quote with a long list of things to remove and add, total R5000. Is there a cheaper way?
