Ok guys as the subject says...X5 - 3,0l diesel - who has done a decat and what where the implications.
A mate wants to do his and is worried there might be problems, his other option is a new pipe at stupid numbers like R40 000.00.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a place/person to help with de-cat, I need to do the Land Rover as well. I believe it's not so much of removing, but more of "moer" it just out with a hammer, don't even have to add extra pipe.

Any advice will be appreciated, my fellow Disco3 forum members are not much help

Yes decat as for take DPF out and adjust ECU thereafter :inlove:

How much extra oomph would that give? The torque on this motor is already quite immense to begin with.

The 3.0d that you're doing at the moment will improve 50Nm torque and roughly 35Kw without pushing (harming anything in the car)

Impressive.

Should certainly add a bit extra to the car, so you reckon a decat without adjusting the mapping would be slightly pointless or is there a benefit of the decat without mapping to be had?

Does anyone have an idea of the life span of a modern day diesel cat?

I know most petrol cars are good for 150-200k km. My Disco runs strong, but the throttle response is getting worse, EGR's is fine, boost and Turbo is fine.

Now the UK experts recon diesel cats tend to block up and result in poor and sluggish throttle response. They recon that even in the UK, the Disco3's pass their MOT tests after a decat.

It also helps for performance:rollsmile:

Decat without remapping is useless as sensors take readings before and after the DPF

Do it propperly or don't do it at all!

As long as carbon clouds are hanging over Guguletu, Langa and Kayalitsha the decat of DPF is fine with me......

It does make sense to take the DPF out especially with our poor diesel and high sulphor content!

This is just up my street as well. I have a 4,4 X5 and want to decat that as well. (I've already done the 325) And likewise would love to know,
1) Who in CPT can do the job properly? and
2) Are there any problems afterwards like engine warnings etc, that have to be attended to.?

Sorry if I'm breaking rules by butting in here.

Your 4.4 is no Diesel.... what do you want to achieve?

However.... we use Powerflow in Saltriver

Decatted my 2003 e46 330d at Steve's Auto Clinic in Boksburg. They did a great job, car felt like new afterwards and definately had more power.

Cost was around R1300 if I recall correctly.

Go to noiseboys in centurion. Will cost about ~R500.

Unless it was blocked, you will gain absolutely no power from this mod. The turbo might spool up slightly quicker, but since the map is stock, stock intake pressures + stock fuel = stock power. Also your exhaust gasses will smell like that of a diesel putco bus. The turbo will also run cooler.

The DPF is self-regenerating, so as long as you do some regular highway driving with the engine up to operating temp and moderate throttle openings at 3000+rpm (overtaking), it should last VERY long.

Sorry P1000.... for R500 anybody can cut and weld!

[irony on]
Can have that done at the local settlement for R100 :=):
[/irony off]

What about the ECU and the freaking warning lights?

Aah, thanks for that I will certainly give him a call. What I hope to achieve is a little bit better breathing ability which will hopefully result in a little improved efficiency which means, maybe, a little improved performance and even economy?
That is what seems to have been the result on my 325CI after the cats were removed so I'm hoping for a similar result on the V8.
The only reason I'm a bit hesitant on the X5 is because I looked under the car on a lift and there are lamda sensors before and after the cats whereas that was not the case on the 325. So I'm just concerned that I may end up with a myriad of problems if I just simply remove the cats and carry on regardless. Lets see what recommendations I get.

Whats with the attitude? Sure, you will have to get the ECU programmed to disable the EBP test. LZ can probably do this for very little money. Besides, if it is a 2003 or earlier model, that would not even be necessary. Just trying to help out the guys like jacques24, the disco most likely does not even have the pressure sensors...

Thats what I mean in the previous post further up regarding the ECU

The ECU will be completely upset and your car will go haywire with your dashboard having a good time and a blinking eye :flyfun:

That needs to be sorted AFTER the decat!
You then can also tweak the maps a bit to get a cleaner "hotter" burn which will result in more power and torque.

With cat the ECU is set to give a "cold" burn in order to protect the expensive catalytic converter..... no need for that when you did the decat (obviously)

No worries.... go ahead and do it!

If possible do a picture thread of the decat .... I'm sure many will appreciate it

Why would your friend want to decat this particular car?

He should first ask: What is his goal with the car? And not the goal of the modification.

Personally, i cant see any value here. Unless one understands his "goal for the car".
