I see. Strange that it would just let go like that. Was it a loud pop sound or a squeel or just nothing?

You can also take it to Gaby from Fastec, they are in the old Gotech premises @ Rand Airport. Fastech also have a good balancing machine from what I've heard.

it was literally a clink sound then i heard no more turbo. i was accelerating from 80 and as i got to 90 it did this. I sent it off to a place called "TURBOFIX" the company i work for uses them for all our plant's turbo's that break.

Also had a E46 320d and turbo packed up, siren noise. Replaced it with a new unit and sold the car shortly afterwards, now I got the stuffed turbo unit in my garage ,don't know what to do with it.

so i found "literally now" a Recon Exchange unit for R5500 and this is what i bought. I sent my current turbo to a place called TURBOFIX and to recon the turbo that was in my car they wanted R6800 :crazylaugh: which is more than what i payed for the turbo in the first place. so ya now to just get it and put it in and hope "to everything possible" that nothing else got damaged in my escapades

Take the boost pipes off, and remove the intercooler. I'm not sure about the E46's but on the E90 you have to take the bumper off. I always use Prepsol to loosen up the grease/oil in the intercooler, and leave it to work about 15mins. After that I hose the crap out of the intercooler with a hosepipe.

Afterwards, just let the intercooler stand to let the water drain and for the inside to dry out. Make sure nothing gets into it while standing to dry out. Then just refit and be safe in the knowledge that your intercooler is 100% clean and free of turbo shards/metal shavings etc.

just fyi..

the !VNT! units from garret should not be reconditioned, this advice from garret themselfs. any parts EXCEPT bearings replaced by a "reconditioner" will be pirate parts, not genuine garret since garret simply do not sell the parts for VNT turbo's aftermarket.

this is the main reason reconditioned diesel turbo's do not last. inferior parts, coupled to mostly inferior workmanship makes for short lived recon turbo's.

Then I shall put it on and flog the car :) cause not many have R12500 excluding labour and service parts just lying around

Ensure that you also clean the air pipes coming from the turbo up to the air intake manifold, the intercooler can be taken to places like Silverton if funds permit and they can also pressure test it. On the E46 ,you can jack the vehicle up , no need to take out the bumper. From what I have seen , it's best to drop the maximum boost pressure of the turbo if the car has high mileage as they say that it may cause the engine to pack up quicker .

When mine packed up I bought an after market turbo called AHT I think. Had the option of doing a service exchange for a recon unit for about 4800. I later checked and found out that you can get some Garret units for less than 10 000. Anyway ,it depends on whether you want to keep the car or not. Mine I sold it shortly afterwards, had spent over R10000 on it in 9 months.
