I find the engineering fascinating on these eco run cars they every bit as focused as a race car just in a different direction

in so sure I would want to drive one in competition though would probably not be able to preserve enough energy to make to the end lol

Even the chic that drives the car wants gun the thing :roflol:, they where constantly telling her to take it easy - it is about efficiency/distance not time.

They engineered everything from the way the clutch system works(inside the motor) right through to the coding of the motor controller. The mechanical department did the chassis and body design - this is the 7th car that they have build.

It will now be shipped to London where they will compete against other universities form across the the world, they are the first team from Africa to compete in the event.

I have been very envious of them the whole time they have been working on the project. Just been to caught up at work to be able to contribute

What do you carry in those tubes?

Left side: toilet roll, Pratley clear quick set, extra bike lock chain cable ties, tools(bike set with some extra ones), insulation tape. Still need to ad steel cable(thin)with crimps and fuses. All the lose items are rolled up in cloth(which is also a "tool") and tied up with a shoelace(which is also a "tool").

Right side: tire repair kit, GPS, phone charge cable and a 12v socket to USB thingy.

I have wet wipes in the topbox to clean my visor and mirrors with and I always carry a handkerchief with me, which I use to wipe the stuff dry with.

I like to be prepared :hammerhead:, I travel around a bit for work to some far out spaces and sites so I would rather be able to ensure I get home and having to sit and wait.

Got a fair bit stuff done on the BMW this weekend.

Finally decide to get the mid section cats removed(ps. I am looking for e36 328 headers if anyone has some laying around). The work was by Noiseboys in Randburg, they just fitted some mild steel straight pipes. They result is that the car as a bit deeper "burp" to it on start up and then at round 3000rpm there is a nice rasp sound. If feels as if the car accelerates smoother, especially when it gets into the higher rpms. Don't know how much of that is just a placebo effect

Also fitted the Re070 tire to the style 44 rims as I have not had any luck with finding a another set of rims. Big difference in the way the car feels and rides, feels much smoother and the grip is good, even when cold. This was all done on Saturday.

Sunday I fitted a new rear number plate lens as the old one dropped out - ordered another just for good measure. I then started with the fitment of the Z4M swaybar I got from Via. Had to drill the poly bushes out to fit the thicker bar. My old bar was a 23mm the M bar is a 27mm(visually it does not look that different, but the 27mm bar is is much heavier). I used a 28mm spade bit(no 27mm at builders) with the drill press - fitment was tighter than the std bushes that Via left on the bar. The car feels greats, changes direction with easy.

Can't wait to get the car back on the track next weekend.

Will upload pics later

nice DB, i want to be a passenger in your car soon. I think you have elevated this car significantly, wonder how the handling compares to an ///M, not straight line power.

When the fanatics hosts a track day, you are more than welcome to come ride shotgun. Or next time I am at Zwartkops I will give you a heads up.

You can ask Ga-3m how it compares to an M - :tease:

Thanks nir, right now the car feels great. It really handles very nicely not harsh or jump - smooth but responsive.

I was chatting to Sean - he has some super special swaybar chart (I had tease a bit there Sean ) The 23mm to 27mm swaybar is 60% increase in stiffness, this with new tire the car really does feel good.

I must now just get my act together and do the end links and rear swaybar bushes :hammerhead:.

Anyway the pics form the weekend.

While I was down there I started to clean the underside a little around the gearbox - there you can also see the straight pipes.

Crap that came off so far - lot more to go.

New lens in place.

Sanded down this area a bit and gave it some high heat engine paint to prevent further rusting - few other spots where touched up as well.

Instead of doing the E36 328i manifolds, why don't you just have noise Boyz Decat your stock exhaust manifold? I did exactly that and I'm happy with the results. See my thread for details : http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=67160&page=2

I chatted to them about it on Saturday, time was the issue - I wanted to go watch Le Mans and I was late(had to fetch the swaybar in PTA). My rational for the e36 headers - complete replacement part - no potential for welding issues, cheaper, and I can fit it myself(I will enjoy that part as well).

I have seen your thread, thanks :coolshake:

you will need a small down pipe for the e36 manifolds not just bolt on because the catted manifolds are longer

I have never brought the e39 to a meet.

The red nr is a 1968 Alfa Romeo 1750 Spider Duetto - future restoration project the old man has planned.

Excellent progress man. If I was you I would get the tnt headers or look for 325i or 328i ones. I think the the 325i flow slightly better but I stand to be corrected. They can be sourced for really cheap

tnt?

I am not sure about the e36 headers anymore as I thought they are a direct fit.
