CSL Engine go Rattle

My CSL is a 05 model with motorplan till 21 april 2012 so about 3 months ago I sent my car to BMW for a vanos noise which they confirmed and they replaced vanos and camgears, but after replacing they tested the car(obviously by starting it) and found that the vanos oil preassure wasnt good and also replaced the preassure valve. After which it was quiet.

Since then I did 300km(two breakfast runs) with it and after washing it last Sunday I found that the noise was back, I took it back to BMW on monday since I only had a week of motorplan left. They wanted to do a parts warranty claim on vanos but I asked them to check cams and cam bearings, which they did. It was found that the cambearings was blue which indicates a loss of oil preassure at some stage. They then also took off the sump to check bigends and mains....same problem!!!!!

In the end BMW SA technicians confirmed that the engine had to be replaced and on Thursday last week they got the go ahead from motorplan and they ordered the new engine on friday the 20th with ONE day left on plan:ty:

The techie says the engine would have done another 3 - 10000km like that but then it would have been for my account when it did go. It comes to about +- R240000....... Imagine that, I would have paid for something that I recon was a result of starting the car with a faulty preassure valve....

Now I have a new machine with 2 year warranty on it:joy:

Also had my engine replaced at 97 000km, so I know how good it feels to walk out of BMW with a huge bill and not have to pay a cent

It is a good feeling, only thing is that I have to wait 3 weeks for the engine.....but I will gladly wait for it....

Not the first one I have heard of doing that.
The sad thing is that one can just replace the bearings and oil pump and it should be fine for another project car, but when motorplan takes it, they send it back to be demolished completely

You lucky bugger. Nice one. It could have been a lot worse had your dealer given you the run around.

I asked them if I pay the "core" charge, can they sell the old engine to me, because like you say I would have done bearings and pump and would have a good motor sitting in storage, but they said no, it goes back to BMW to be placed back in the system..... and this was the workshop managers words, not mine. I wouldnt know what he meant by it.

Will be interesting to find out, for the S54 guys, as to what killed the engine and how to prevent it.

I won’t be surprised if it turned out to be a faulty oil pump.

Its the first thing they tested, 2 bar when ticking over and 4.5 bar at revs... apparently its good pressure! It takes n moment of pressure loss to ruin the bearings.

I also have a 04 E46 M and I do the oil and filter every 10000km and it sits on 105000km and the motor still sounds perfect. I just think that a service interval of 20000km+ on a high performance engine even with longlife oil cant be a good idea.

Something that is worth while is having the oil tested mid way through the interval. This will tell you if any unwanted wear is happening. It is not expensive and a very good indicator that something is wrong... before it throws a leg out of bed. We have a lab here at work... I have tested and fairly confident that by bearing shells are not about to turn in their sleeves.

I didnt know there is someone that does that! Is it accurate? Does it not pick up normal wear?

I think the CSL is still one of the best BMW ever!!! I wouldn't mind having one ESPECIALLY with a brand new engine....
How does it compare to your V8 M?
