Crankshaft Pulley

Hi Guys,

Got the 17% reduction and pulley replaced on Saturday.
Aaaa the joys... Breaking traction into 2nd is always fun.

But I what I want to ask: Not sure how many of you are familiar
with the Crankshaft Pulley/harmonic balancer problem?? Under
hard acceleration mainly between 3-4k rpm you get this irritating
ticking noise. It progresses through the revs but soon dies off
due to the engine sound. I've done a ton of reading and come
across this Link

Anyone have this problem? So it needs to be replaced. Now
I don't want to take it to the thieving dealership to get
replaced. Either another factory one or an aftermarket??

Didn't have this problem, but I'm running an aftermarket crankshaft pulley with a harmonic balancer. It's made by ATI, but you're looking at about R6-7k before labour.

There's different names for these things so it's a bit confusing.

The crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer is the unit itself. I don't
know all the names for these things but I know how it works etc.
There's a rubber lining that sits inside it that gets stuffed up. Now
I think that's my problem. It causes the an offset and that's why
you get that annoying ticking sound.

I thought I would just replace it with a ALTA lightweight pulley?
They relatively cheap. Why the hell was the ATI setup so costly??

But reading these American Forums can be a bit annoying at times.
They don't always explain things quite as well as we do

But must be other guys here with this same problem here??

Or maby you all running single box silencers and all you hear
is GWAAAAAAK! :nono:

Be easy on the aftermarket crank pulley's (Alta etc) now that you already have a 17% because its just going to generate more heat and you dont need that. Im sure mike can comment on this.

Could be. I Don't want to increase the size of the crank pulley.
Just replace it. As from my understanding. It's on it's way out.
Thought I might as well add something a bit better in the process.

From what I've read (and I sit on forums for days) know one
has had any problems with the replacement from ALTA. Even
ALTA themselves claim it does not do any damage.

Oh I thought you wanted to increase the size of it because I know alta makes 2 - 4 % sizes also. And running a 2% on a 17% reduction would be a 19% total. Imagine the heat soak on the stock cooler :censored:

@ Mike, how well does the chargecooler operate over the stock? Have you got a scanguage or something of that sort which you could compare?

Very true. Cape Town summers can be rather hot as well.

outmotoring.com and they deliver to SA.
Around R1k +-R500 for postage. Not to bad I guess. Where else can
we get things done around here! Then I would prefer someone else
to install it for me... :cursin:

I bought the ATI because it has a fluid dampener in it. Most costly, but I'd rather rule out any possibility of damage to the engine.
The light weight crank pullies by ALTA, Cravenspeed etc. have been ongoing forever. At the end of the day, do what you feel comfortable with.

The chargecooler has a huge difference. I can tough the intake as it's cool enough, where as before it would have been impossible, even with a larger aftermarket air to air intercooler.

Don't forgot the duties Ryan, but for that price it will only be a couple hundred bucks at most.

Thanks for the advice

It's not a major thing. Just the noise annoys me mostly.
Thats why I want to change it. I checked the ATI. They
go for around $400. Yes it does depend on what you want/like.
There's a ton of write up on the good the bad and the ungly.
Endless really.

I had the 17% Sc and 2% Crank Pulley on my R53 and did not have any hassles. Got them in from outmotoring and it was a breeze dealing with them.

You going to have Intake temp issues though. Mike arranged a GRS Intercooler and it wokrd like a charm. (Got it for sale BTW :) )

You also gonna have to go with colder plugs. I brought in a set of Beru Plugs from outmotoring. Landed cost was about R350 for the set.
