Corsa C Ute - Another Toy Story

There are some modifications required. Definitely not a straight drop-in and go...

Donor cost close to R40k :yuck: but hopefully I can recover some money stripping it for spares.

Ok, so yesterday I took on the challenge of putting the Z20LET radiator into my ute. First of all, I had to strip both radiators out the respective vehicles (I had fitted the new radiator to the coupe to test the engine etc).

Fitting my Corsa radiator to the coupe wasn't an issue. I just made some temporary mounting brackets to hold it in place at the top, as well as to secure the intercooler on the front.

The big shlep came in fitting the bigger radiator to the Corsa. The bottom mounting points fit straight in, but then I had to make some custom brackets to hold the top part of the radiator. Thankfully this went by pretty smoothly, and I'm happy with the results. I also slotted the bottom mounting brackets where they attach onto the subframe. I did this so that I can slide the radiator back a few mms for when I fit my beeeg cooler.

Here's some pics of the radiator fitted: I'm also using the Coupe's cooling fan as well, as it bolts directly to the radiator:

Lastly just for some science again, when compared to my old radiator, the new radiator is 60mm longer, 18mm taller, and 12mm thicker. From some careful calculating, I reckon the new one has 150% more cooling capacity, so I don't expect heat issues when I do my transplant.

Ok another quick update:

1) after much fighting, the company overseas is re-shipping me my mounts which I never received. So they should arrive next week sometime.

Then this morning I went and did some grocery shopping:

2) Cam Belt Kit:

3) Silicone bends and S/Steel clamps:

So once my mounts arrive, I will be ready to start with the conversion. I went to see Uncle Allen this morning, and he said he could help in the next 2 weeks or so.

Almost time for the fun and games to begin

My mounts have arrived! Now I have the main missing piece which was potentially gonna be causing some delays.

My mind is at rest now, so I know if I begin stripping, then I will be able to fit the Z20LET motor.

I guess this weekend I may end up doing some major stripping

I need to do a brake upgrade on my UTE as even with abs, this thing is fcking useless especially in wet weather.

Any suggestions? Not bothered about warranty, my safety is more important frankly.

its it not a tire problem? brakes cant stop you if they have not traction to work with...

Apologies for thread jack firstly.

I have conti sport contact 2, those tyres are meant to be good in wet aren't they? On a number of occasions in wet weather I'd be driving between 60-80 and needed to come to a stop at a traffic light but it just kept sliding forward. The one time I had to drive up a curb and fck my mags up to avoid hitting the car in front of me.

if you locking up the wheels brakes can do no more to stop you... if you are braking and pushing the pedal and it seems not to do anything then you need to look at brakes...

I hate conti in the wet they even more useless i honestly dont know why they have such a good name...

Yeah its braking with the gears and constantly pushing the pedal, locking in wet is almost suicidal in this UTE :nonono:

Lol @ my thread hijack.

From my side in terms of brake upgrades, there's a few options:

1) Check your current setup, maybe your disks / pads are worn. This can have a significant impact on braking performance. Also don't use cheap shit. Buy proper Ferodo or ATE pads.

2) Upgrade the standard disks and pads to something from Powerbrake or EBC.

3) Do an OEM big brake upgrade like I did.

4) Spend big bucks on getting huge discs fabricated, along with the necessary adaptors etc needed to house the bigger calipers.

Also remember bigger brakes mean you need to run bigger wheels. I can only run a min. 15in wheel now. IF I went 307mm front discs, the min. I could use would be 16in wheels etc. (Also don't forget you will need to upgrade the spare as well).

It all depends what you want to do with the Ute, and how much cash you are willing to spend. If you're not planning on making the Ute faster, then the stock brakes are fine (just drive slower, especially in the wet - dangerous).

My upgrade suite my purposes fine. The Ute stops chop-chop, and I'm generally not heavy on brakes anyway, so I don't need a super-duper racing setup.

The guy who is going to help me with my build also has a Ute with a 2l Turbo motor. Granted it's a wild motor (412kw on the wheels), and he opted to go for a custom-made 312mm setup for the front.

It all depends what you want. I would say your first port of call would be to check your current setup, because it can't be THAT bad, lol.

(And remember it's a Ute, not a performance car - so it's braking performance will never compare to a R300k BMW / Audi / Merc etc) :=):
