Corsa C Ute - Another Toy Story

Whoop Whoop! I got a call yesterday mid-morning from RBTS to say that my Ute is ready. Went through to collect it at lunchtime.

The install went smoothly, and looks very professional. All the sensors are working as they should as well. The boost has been left just about standard - at 0.7Bar (Apparently my wastegate threads are a bit dodge, so that can't be adjusted). Ross also said he had to fuel it a bit rich, to counteract the onset of detonation.

I guess you're also waiting for the numbers??? Well here they are:

144kW @5000rpm (at the wheels) - approx. 180kW on the Flywheel
317Nm @4500rpm (at the wheels) - approx. 382Nm on the Flywheel

I took my Ute to Ross a few months ago for a baseline figure. It made 50wkW and 114wNm. So the new figures represent a 188% increase in power, and 278% increase in torque! I can't complain about that.

And while all this sounds great, there were a few niggles which needed sorting out now that I have collected the Ute. There was a leaking fuel fitting where the fuel line attaches onto the fuel rail. Then there was a bit of a grinding noise coming from the passenger side when the motor starts to load up under boost. Through my investigations this morning, I discovered that the CV joint was rubbing on the subframe. So I've tried to adjust the rear gearbox mounting to hopefully solve this issue. Then there is still a bit of rubbing and vibration coming from the engine bay. I suspect it might be the sump which is touching on the subframe as well. I'll have to try have a look and see if I can diagnose where the noise is coming from.

Last of all, I need to make a plan about my improvised breather tank. There are simply way too many fumes circulating under the bonnet, so much so that I actually get a bit goofed from it all, followed by a bad headache. I have to sort that out sooner rather than later.

But other than that, things are good. The motor sounds good. LOTS of turbo noise and dump valve antics are being fed up the induction pipe to the cone filter. So far only me and my boet find it appealing. I haven't received positive reviews from the wife, lol.

And that exhaust. I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. It doesn't drone at all, either at low revs or when cruising on the highway. But damn, let the Ute stretch its legs and it Roars! It's pretty much the perfect compromise. If you drive it decently, it is quiet and restrained, but when you're on it, then it will most probably frighten small kids and old people.

I'll post pics up over the weekend and next week, as well as scans of the dyno sheets. I'll also try take a couple of video clips.

Now it's time to go fiddle again....

WOW, nice and neat build, just the way it should be, reminds me of my 2.0 16v Corsa B I sold about 2 months ago.

Enjoy it

Just another quick update:

Here's a better pic of the engine bay now that everything is done:

And here are the dyno sheets. The baseline run was with the 1400 motor :D

I'll post some videos soon, just need to edit them a bit to make them smaller, and then upload them to Youtube.

Hi all,

Haven't updated in a while, but I thought I would share a few updates.

When my Ute went back to RBTS for a checkup, we found that the tappet cover gasket was leaking quite badly and fouling the plugs and suppressors. This was the cause for the hesitation when accelerating under full throttle. I also changed the actuator on the turbo, as the original one had a small bend in it from when the coupe had the accident. Anyway, Ross made a couple of small changes to the tune, and the Ute managed 162kW and 317Nm on the wheels (0.7bar boost, on pump fuel) Ross did say that the timing is a bit too advanced for his liking, and that I would need to bring the Ute back once I had sorted out the oil leak, replaced the plugs etc.

Anyways, I've replaced the tappet cover gasket and the spark plugs. So far it seems 100%, it hasn't missed a beat since then. It's going back to Ross next week just to sort out the timing, but then it should be all done on that front.

I've been enjoying the Ute over the past 2 weeks. But I haven't enjoyed the fuel consumption: averaging 14l/100kms the past 3 tanks <cough> <cough> I'm trying to drive like a granny on the current tank of fuel, to see what I can get the consumption down to.

Next on the to-do list will be to sort out a few minor cosmetic issues, and then I'll have a go at fitting the Coupe's leather seats into the Ute.

Hi all,

Just some more updates on my Ute: Fuel consumption is down (probably cos I've calmed down while driving it, lol). It's sitting between 11-12l/100kms the past 2 tanks. I doubt it will get any better than that.

Below are some videos which I took a while back. Finally got round to uploading them:

This was when it was still making 144wkW. Took it down my private test track, I didn't take enough "brave pills" so tapped off after a while.
Acceleration 0-180km/h

It's much the same now that it's making 164wkW, possibly just a teeny weeny bit faster - but you get the idea

Part throttle acceleration

Full throttle acceleration

Then this was just a bit of an audio clip I took while I was waiting at Ross the one morning. He was busy working his magic:
Dyno pull

Then, moving away from the performance side of things, I tackled a long overdue project: I made up a portable / removable frame to fit on the back of my Ute. Now we can chuck the dogs on the back if we want to take them for walks or something, and there isn't a risk of them jumping off to attack some vagrant on the side of the road, lol.

This was also a bit of a mission, but I'm happy with the outcome. The dogs are also busy with quality control checks :D

That's all for now.

I think when you're back we must line up and have a good ol' drag race.

I'd love my first BMW victim to be a 760i
