Contemplating a E46 320d...

Hi Gents,

I've been considering changing to a E46 320d for quite some time now.

My daily runner is fine, so I'm not under pressure to get another set of wheels. But you know when you just have that itch that won't go away...

I need your advice... What should one look out for on E46 diesels?

On the 320d, which is better? Auto, 5spd man or 6spd man?

Do these vehicles seem to be good value for money?

Option 1

Option 2

Option 3

Thank you for your advice in advance... :=):

Well as far as i know with the e46 diesels it is best to go for the later models as they where a but more reliable, though I think they are not as good as the e90's, maybe a better idea to go for a early model e90 320d :dunno:. Auto seem to be a better box in how it drives when it comes to diesels, though I would think is would better in terms of reliability to go for a manual box.

Stay away from E46 320d...they are known to be problematic, especially the auto's for some reason

+1 for about the same money, you should be able to find a e46 330d (6 speed) just remove the swirl flaps, and you will have an awesome car for very little money.

I recently got an 02 320d. I did the swirl flap mod and am loving the car. Its very economical ( I get +- 1000 k's per tank) and its pretty damn strong on an incline. Only issues I have are the typical e46 ones being lower control arm bushing wear and right front window regulator.

I'd say go for it, especially if you do a lot of driving, it will save you cash on fuel!

I good friend of mine is a mac at porsche, and he told me to avoid secondhand diesels, now im not saying he's right but it isnt the first time iv heard that. If i could give u a piece of advice0- DO UR HOMEWORK before spending that kind of money.

Ps: E90's soon to be being discontinued, BMW will have excellent specials on them. Give em a visit:=):

been running diesels for the last 8 years - will never go back to petrol - present car 2007 E90 320d 6 speed 118 000km - some small issues - dont use a diesel for small journeys to the shops and back everyday - stick to Shell or Bp 50pp where possible and use correct oil spec - last car did 340 000km no major issues
