Hi guys ... just wondering is it worth it putting a cone filter on my car vs the hassle of getting pulled over in road blocks? Want to know if it'l make any real difference

Why would the police pull you off? And anyway if you fit a simota cone they will not be able to keep up with you when you unleash the extra 30 -40 kw from the engine you can

Some time back, someone did a test to see if it was worth doing on a 318i i think, and the answer was no...so don't waste your time :thumbdo:

I have a 4 pot aswell, my advice : do it if it makes you happy.. all these guys with 6 and 8 cylinders don't understand us too well... Everyone always says "You bought the wrong car" :blab: But for me I love it, even if it just makes 1 horse difference I'll mod, I'm not saying spend thousands but nice small mods make me very happy. I don't want a citi golf sound alike either but c'mon don't you think our BMW's deserve a bit more credit? The right filter will improve throttle response and WON'T sound like a 13 hundred.

DISCLAIMER *IN MY HUMBLE OPINION*

99% of the time, a new/clean OEM filter is just as good from a performance perspective.

Many, many people replace a clogged filter with a new (INSERT FAMOUS BRAND HERE) filter and claim to have a substantial improvement, when in fact all they did was replace a dirty/clogged filter with a clean one.

Yes, there are guys who will swear by some of them, but they are also guys who will swear at some of them after their MAFs were messed up with oil.

Just my R0.02 zim cents

Very good point about the MAF I forgot.. something to be very careful about.

I posted from blackberry It would not let me choose the font I wanted I was just joking if the dude wants to put on a powerfull cone and unleash the 318 bavarian monsters power onto public roads so be it

Good luck mate watch out for the roadblocks

Joking man I agree you do what makes you happy give it a go it. Will most proberbly sound good I put one on a 18T passat once it sounded wicked but it started using a lot of petrol

if you just swapping the box out for an open/half shielded filter you will damage your performance more than help it because you will be sucking hot air in from around the engine... but if you want to do it right the CAIs are a bit too expensive for the performance you get...

I recently changed the airflow pipe that leads across the radiator by moving the small trumpet that clips onto the frame next to the radiator and fixing it in the upside down position on the airfilter side of the radiator and then removed :idea:the solid plastic piece of airflow pipe that connects the flexible section to the airbox and cut that shorter and made a new hole on the front side of the airbox to accommodate the pipe. I then closed up the original entry hole and also removed the funny boxy section that sits on the topside of the airbox above the power steering reservoir and closed that hole up as well. Have only done about 700km since and still have to fill up to see what my consumption is now. Cannot really feel improvement but am sure that the car must get more air than standard!

No one will hear a cone filter while you are doing 10km/h at a road block.

Secondly, what else have you done on your car? Maybe do a decat and fit straight pipes or resonators?

Thirdly, im not gona start anything here but the only way a BMW will ever sound like a 1.3 golf is if u swop your engine for a 1.3 golf engine. Do what makes u happy. I was fortunate enough to have gconry borrow his cone filter from his induction kit so i can get an idea of what it may sound like if i do go that route. I very much enjoyed the induction sound with my decatted exhaust and other mods so i have definately considered it.

If you do go the cone filter route remember you will need a heat shield as well! Find out if someone is willing to help you out to get an idea. Check some vids on youtube and then decide if YOU like it or not.

very good answer.
fact is that no real performance will be gained (or lost for that matter) so its about sound. dont know if you will get that noise like the other engines get but its worth a listen.

on my 323 E30 it didnt give the sound i thought it would but after hearing other E30s I knew it made a difference. on my new car I still have the stock box mostly because im too lazy to put it on.

Putting in a cone filter is your personal choice.

as said above, and as mentioned in some magazines, the power gains if any are miniscule.

The car will only become heavier on fuel because your right foot gets heavier, always wanting to hear than cone filter....

Well just putting a cone on a car does not give a small power increase, it actually gives a really nice power loss, cause you just end up sucking a lot of hot air into the engine. Now if you put on some heat shielding you can reduce this loss, and if you go further still by having proper ducting for the air and to shield it even better from the engine heat you can get some small gains. This of course usually entails you spending quite a bit of money on the intake, lets say in the R3000+ range.

The you need to consider the filter element as well, in most cases they are oiled filters and this oil will eventually start coating the MAF, leading to premature failure. The you also need to consider the filtering capabilities of the element, some of them give better airflow for one simple reason - they don't filter as well as the OEM paper filter, so it is also a good idea to compare the level of filtration for the aftermarket brand you intend on using to the OEM one.
