Compression Test 2007 323i e90

My e90 (323i 2007 149500km) has started to use alot of oil, so I took it in (still under MP until 150000km) for the dealership to have a look. They said they will nee dto do a compression test to determine the next steps.

Does anyone know how they perform this test and what do they look for?

They will remove all the spark plugs and screw a pressure gauge in its place. The engine is cranked to measure the maximum cylinder compression pressure at each cylinder, which has to be within a certain spec. If one or more cylinders are found outside spec, they will do further wet compression tests (squirting oil into the cylinder before the test) to determine if the compression leakage is between the rings/bore, or at the valve seats.

Good luck with the repair. Either way, it sounds like MP will take a beating here.

Thanks for the reply. They did say they would do both dry & wet compression tests. Let see waht happens.

Passed compression test. Advisor says its probably valve stem seals which have hardened and will need to be replaced.

Keeping in mind the leak test and the compression test are two different things looking for two different possible symptoms of oil ingress to the cylinder. But i insist that both needs to be done.

Ok before we go any further we need to get into the history...

How long have you owned this vehicle. What is its operating enviroment. It seems you doing alot of travelling so is it alot of short trips / long runs.

I got it last July with 118000km on the clock, with MP to 150000km. I do about 3000km pm of urban driving (mostly off the highways).

The vehicle has been regularly serviced, the power is still great and I haven't had any real issues besides the recent high oil consumption.
