Well I picked her up today and immediately got to work doing some cleaning and inspecting...

So first thing was the irregular idling and almost dying when you come off the throttle at a robot. As suspected there was a loose fitting on the intake. Tightened and idles like a satisfied kitten.

All fittings and rubbers are OK. Some in need of repair. But discovered the front seats have been recovered... and do not match the rear. :cursin: No biggie and bearly noticable.

sunroof is sticking and after backwards and forwarding a heap of times I discovered the sunroof panel is scraping onside the roof and have lovely scratches on the sunroof now... It opens OK. But struggles to close, I suspect it has been removed and not put back correctly. I greased it all up and it didn't help.

Seats sound like they have never been serviced and work in every direction with some effort... even has electrically elevated headrest!!! :excited:BUTTONS I WANT MORE BUTTONS:excited:

The air circulation knobs don't do anything so need to look at that. And aircon not wekking. But it was 2 months ago so will regas tomorrow...

Also going to get alignment and suspension check out tomorrow. All feels good but a slight pull to the one side and judder that feels like an out of balance wheel... (he says hopefully).

Scratches on the paintwork:cursin: Will try scratchX tomorrow and see if they will buff out.

Used SONEX plastic gel stuff on all the plastics and rubbers outside. Generally they are OK, just aged.

All in all the car has been looked after through its life... just gotten a bit tatty. 90% of the stuff is DIY.

So anyone know anything about the OBC display unit? Mine just has 4 flashing points.

I had an obc issue years ago on my e30 325is. Only got 4 stripes on the display. Previous owner told me the obc was stuffed. Then one day I had instrumentation issues and we removed the gauge cluster to fix. When I plugged everything back in, the obc kicked into life. Turned out the the one plug was not properly connected.

Might be worth a shot.

OK, sorted the OBC. Disconnected the battery for the night. Touched the two battery wires together (off the battery). Then got frustrated and pushed random buttons... something changed and pressed more random buttons and now it works!! The next step was removing it but luckily it works now.

Sound system has been put in so I have music again.

Chrome all polished with maquires metal polish. Used up all my painters tape so only bumpers/ rearview mirrors finished and they look 10 times better!! Rear is a bit corroded but after a polish it don't look nearly as bad. After a shampoo I realised I was washing paint that felt like sandpaper... I then did a quick clay on the bonnet and :dropjaw: good lord, it was filthy:shocked: Will complete that job when I get some fresh clay. Seats have been all moistered up with leather treatment. Re-upholstering is definitely on the cards.

The seats are now fully functioning. I had a loose cable on the passenger side and when I disassembled the mechanism there was a worm gear missing:bawling: Anyway after much consternation my missus mentioned that she saw a worm type thing in the radio-face box when she went through the glovebox... And it was the required part :clap: So all is well.

Off to try Scratch X on the paint blemishes.

Well, packed 4 people and luggage for a braai in Houtbay. What a magic car. Abit of a squeeze in the back... I had to go in the back coming back due to intoxication :mmm: and the second smallest person But very comfy.

I have packed her away and she will sit for 2 months until i get back. Might send it for leather redo while I am away.

Anyone have a 635csi boot badge? Sort of only noticed it was missing after I got the car.

So off to bruces looking for bits of trim with minor success. But new bonnet badge (first things first). No joy on a new steering wheel. No joy on the door handle surrounds (same as e30 if anyone has laying around) I need 1 blue or 1 black.

Booked in next monday for leather and some interior TLC at McCarthy auto trimmers.

Car booked in on the 20th for mechanical going through. They have reserved a week in the shop and they will also take car of a small patch of rust I found in the sill. It is using water and gave me a scare two days ago when it wouldn't go above idle. That would be a fuel pump relay... the car had been standing for 2 months, but I spend the whole of yesterday running around cape town in it and WHAT A PLEASURE to drive. Even with the slightly out of aligned wheels. No a single stutter from the engine the whole day. Pulls impressively all the way to 130km/h.

Just popped in to BMW to get parts with a friend and as an exercise inquired how much the 635csi badge would cost if i got it through them. They humoured me and the 635 was R350, the cs R300 and the i... wait for it... R250!!!!!!

So anyway here is a progress report.

Took the 6 in to McCarthey to have the dash and the seats recovered in black leather. But engine quit before i could get there... on a flatbed and off to Zeemax... And in typical sytle it starts fine at zeemax. So seeing as its intermittant I drove it to Mc Cartheys where they messed around for a week and did very little. So it went without interior to RCS Auto in Montague gardens where Randolph who does a very good no bull job. I left it there for a week with an open mandate besides the service. So if he finds something wrong fix it. Just tell me about big stuff So he did the brakes (pad compound fell off the backing plate!!), aircon, powersteering, tappets and banjo bolt, platted up a patch of rust in the wheel well, water pipes and some other sunday stuff. She now drives like a dream... I still need to do the wheel alignment and wheel balancing...

Then back to Mc Carthies where a week later I had to call to find out that my car was done.

Leather looks gorgeous... but the drivers side door card fell off on saterday... no time to fix...

Now i am back in the Sahara for 2 months again

After missing out on a second hand 635csi badge on e-bay I bit the bullet and got a 635i badge (from Taiwan)... cost R70 incl shipping so I will match this up to an original cs bit for R420...

It has been a roller coaster few weeks with the shark.

After standing for 2 months she fired right up. Ran smooth. So decided to take the pregnant missus for lunch in the shark. We have a long wait robot at the bottom of a hill in our suburb and as we waited the 6 started to miss, ever so slightly. But I knew all was not well. When the light turned green and I put foot it died and refused to start. Very embarrassing... anyway pushed it over the road fetched the coupe and continued to lunch.

After much fiddling and fault finding I replaced the main relay and that cured the no start issue. But still the dying and no acceleration. I read a forum entry where someone said that if you have a faulty tank fuel pump you fill the tank full and the second fuel pump will then work fine by itself. So I did a dash down to the gas station and barely made it to the pump... filled up with unleaded as it had LRP in before and barely made it out the Engen, but it didn't die. Coughing and spluttering I made it home then decided to persist iether working out air or the LRP fuel I had in before. After a few minutes there was no sign of anything wrong and I even did a high speed run and no issues.

Apart from that I found out that the auto trimmers put the drivers side handles and door card back with no screws... and the rear windows don't work any more... I need to remove the seats to see what they f%^%$ed up there.

Quite a journey you have had with that car. I hope you manage to resolve everything and not throw in the towel.

Typical local worksmanship. Nothing is done with pride and they always manage to break something else in the process.

It sucks when you have to fix something a previous owner messed up. My air vents in the 540 are broken somehow as the air comes out between the dash and firewall.

Best of luck with the car. It will be awesome once it's done :thumb:
