Claiming accident damage from city

Hi there,

A friend of mine had a accident today on nelson mandela boulevard before the waterfront robots there's a corner and theres a drainage grid running across the road. He was going the speed limit and hit the drainage grid and the car slipped and went into the side. Its a toyota tazz and only 3rd party insurance.

Can one claim this from the city and if so what is the procedure?

Alternatively whats the best thing to do with the car, sell it to a scrap yard?

Those parts are pretty cheap.

Claiming from the city is possible, but difficult.

Those drainage grids are horriable especially with the wet weather we having.
I drove that area for over 4 years and everytime it rained it would bug me.
Very stressing.

Thanks, the towtruck driver said there had been 3 other accidents that day on that same bend. I mean if its such a problem the city should do something about it. Its times like these I'm glad i drive a BMW.

There is also minor damage to the rear. The collision was from the right side of the car, so i dont know why i took a photo from the left.

I know which draining plates you refer to and I am always extremely cautious when driving that road, for this specific reason. The BM handled it well but lots of cars actually pull toward the centre barrier when going over those plates.

The city will take forever and a day to payout. If it were my car I'd strip what is useable and sell it off then sell the shell to a scrap yard. A 2E Tazz motor is worth around R8k alone.

That is a problem area, especially for cars without all those electronic safeguards.
Best thing to do is try & keep the car as stable as possible, turning carefully & avoid applying brakes or accelerating while turning.
No sudden turning or braking! Braking should be done before the turn, not during.
This is why we should have proper defensive driving classes not the K53 K**.
Everyone should know how to drive in bad conditions ( & when to use the fog lights )
Your friend should check his tyres etc on the car before even attempting to claim as I'm sure they'll look for any excuse not to pay.
He should def give them grief though, it's the only way they'll do something.
