Chip

Can anyone tell me about the UniQ chip. Is it decent? Should I , shouldn't I?

Is thinking of chipping the POFS. KSD told me that they will dyno the car before and after, and then decide if the chip is making acceptable difference. If not, they will take it out again, no questions asked, no money payable. They claim they have done it before on a e36 318i and gains of around 10% was achieved.

Get a price from Zeemax too ... think i paid about R1700 for the chip only. Not sure how much it cost in total.

that's cheap, RGM said they would get about 14% or 14kw(cant remember) difference on my 318is and the chip costs R4300 excl VAT.

I was looking at doing the same on my 120d and they reckon huge gains. I was going to go for the plug and play system, so I could remove it whenever I wanted. But after some soul searching :mmm: thought there's alot more to an ecu and fuel map than just adding more fuel to get performance. So decided against it... So just gonna get used to the original performance. Also I spoke to one of the guys and his car cuts out due to probable over fuelling because of the chip.

If done properly, a chip could be worthwhile. But not happy enough with things thus far...

***As a quick disclaimer, this is my opinion and obviously not everyone's going to agree. But for me I'm not happy with a chip not done by BMW, (which to my knowledge they do not do).***

I boufg the M3 with the chip already installed and had it dynoed after the first service. I d experience some overfueling which results in the car cutting out sometimes, like on the skidpan, and once during a drag race. RGMotorsport does set the chip for overfueling to protect the engine from knocking. I reckon, if one sets the chip correct, it does make a huge difference, especially in response. Look at what the guys from Xcede is doing. So, in my opinion, a chip alone won't make a huge difference, but combining it with a performance filter and some pyping, the package should not be to bad.

W.r.t the price, yes well, R4500 is RGM prices which I think is way to much. The nice thing about the Dastek Unichip (UniQ) is like you said, it can be taken out at any time and the cars original charachter can be programmed back. No need to cut into wire harnesses or anything.

I think you are fortunate to have a number of tuners on the forum. Please note Rennzport is not a tuning company...so we cannot sell you a chip unless you have two turbos....:)....My suggestion would be that you look at all the options...what is available and at what price. Not all "chips" are the same in terms of power outputs...idealy you also want to choose a company that can provide a support service after the installation (in the unlikely event something goes wrong).
Once you have a little list of chippies; price and by whom & after service...then make a call.

I like what I read here. Anyone want to share some info on other options. I don't have to use UniQ. I am looking for a good review on chips that have been used by forum members.

Speak to Streetracer, he gave me a few figures on the e34 535i which I can do to increase performance and get a better fuel consumption. I really like his ideas but thinking of going with just the dyno.

Steve's Auto Clinic quoted me R2950; Dyno before and after including peak tuning. i was advised that getting a custom exhaust from them would give me a 15 % gain in conjunction with the chip on my 1995 325i. i have been told that the price is ridiculously expensive though.

Imran I went to Powerflow in East London and a branch and exhaust was nearly 7000 for the 325i . Left there quickly !!
One of my children left a chip in the car - had to vacuum it out of the carpet .

I Uni-chipped my e36 325i @ Maus performance for R2400. No real performance improvement except maybe smoother acceleration, and fuel consumption is better by +/- 5%. I have a free-flow zorst, and cone filter (probably robbs power!). They also did before and after dyno run and on paper it shows a bigger improvement than is felt on the road.

the chip works well with induction -check GIZMO's tread

i noticed a difference in fuel consumption and more pluck above 150 -160
:)
