Why can't diagnostics just tell you "listen poephol, there's a fault with this part. Replace it and you're good to go"...?

:(
The software for VAG does that, and I miss it so much! The BMW diagnostic software (well the ones I've tried) require that you know that the values SHOULD be, and then you can deduce on your own what's what. And getting info on BMW's on the net is also such a mess because you have people posting things like "I replaced parts x, y, z etc and that solved the problem for a while, but it came back and I found out it was actually just part w acting up".

But I think the pre-supply is a little low on your car. I'll see if I can measure mine for you today

Yeah I've tried searching but to no avail. The only thing I keep coming up with is the sensor that I'm looking for:

If Gert says your pressure is 3.2 bar but you read 5.1 bar then can't it be that the car maybe also thinks that the pressure is 3.2 bar and it goes into limp mode or cuts power?

Don't talk of such things that sound so expensive to fix

How difficult is it to remove that sensor? Is it the one with the plus right at the back of the motor? Maybe we can meet up and swop mine out and see if it fixes the problem?

That sensor is pretty easy to remove. Sits on the rail right at the back. You need to take the intake off to get there with a 27 spanner, that's about the worst part of the job.

I'm doing a process of elimination here now so your offer is kindly appreciated :ty:

First, I'm getting yet another high pressure fuel pump today. Just about to go fetch it. It comes with a new regulator as well. So if the problem persists after this, I can rule out the HPFP. I'm doing this because a little speck of dust on my brain is telling me the current new pump might be faulty.

Then, problem persisting, I will swap the fuel pressure sensor on the rail out (will let you know if I need help bud, thanks again).

If the problem still persists after this, it's going to get really expensive:

  • Low pressure fuel pump - passenger footwell side
  • Lift pump - in the tank
  • Replace all fuel lines
  • Send injectors for testing/refurbing again
  • New rail (???)

The above list sounds so unnecessary...

have you gone to a bosch mechanic and had your injectors tested? its a very quick test. Before buying new expensive parts maybe just get an injector test done. I know there is a bosch place in strijdom park, I did go there once to have my injectors tested a few years back.

I've also got a feeling it's low pressure supply to the hpfp.

Let me know bud, I'm more than willing to come help out and learn!

Injectors have been tested. If injectors were faulty the car wouldn't idle decently nor would it perform properly even under slow speeds.

Okay, new HPFP and regulator in. Some more hoses changed.

Too scared to start up and take for a test drive now...

:(

After fully assembling the engine bay today I started her to make sure all was working, let her idle a bit, listened for any strange sounds, and switched off.

She's been washed, and now she sits.
