So instead of internet procrastinating and debating I went to go check the car out.
There is no Overspray under the hood from what I saw.
The car does need some attention but I'd say a couple grand and you'll have neatish more door...
The motor sounds good, but there are some areas of concern.....
The clutch is heavy, feels and takes like a button clutch and takes VERY low down. Could just be the slave cylinder playing games though (R1,045+- from BMW)...
Interior needs quite a bit of attention with some loose bits and driver's side door handle not operational from the inside....
A-Pillar material needs replacing too, shoddy workmanship there...
Exhaust rubbers need replacing as the exhaust is knocking agianst the underside of the body..

Engine sounds decent but didn't pull quite like the stroker so was somewhat disappointed...

Other then that, should I remember anything 'll post it

upncoming, I think most of those negative points you mentioned speaks volumes about the probability that this car was: a) a rebuild, b) for some reason had a colour change. I stand by my statement that I saw off spray. Also, the owner doesn't seem too knowledgable, naming the colour Callistro (I know, I had a Calypso red E36 once upon a time) Besides: "Shoddy workmanship" = "Loose bits"

M3 badge doesn't look right. Did the M3 have a wider track than the non-M E36 because there is something just not right with it. I can spot an M at a glance and I would have put money on this one not having an M engine...

As for there being overspray, I especially checked that section where overspray was supposedly seen but its a silver mounting bracket that was reflecting...

and yeah, the owner doesn't know much about the car at all..

About it being a deal, I'd only buy it if I had a good couple grand to play with, that being said I'd buy a sorted M....Either that or get myself a cabrio, thats what I actually want! A cabrio, hence my car being for sale....

Having a ///M motor and everything ///M doesnt make it an M, if it didnt roll out of the plant as an M, it is not (any ///m owner will tell you that). If anybody goes to see this car please get the Vin, so we can get the history from BMW.

And check by the battery positive box on the left, there's over spray there..

other things to check visually is there must be M badge on brake calipers, M door sill covers, must have the wood grain finish, cluster must have the M badge in it. Also show oil temp and not fuel consumption in speedo cluster. Must have centre arm rest, must have onboard computer same as the 328i though.

The rear suspension arms must also have M badge on as they are beefier.

From my experience, you do not want to buy a M car that is not 100%.

Clutch alone is about R4000 inlc labour, private
front and rear brake discs and pads R11 000
Dual Vanos R18 000 to R20 000 roughly.

You will spend a fortune trying to fix a M car trying to get it into good condition again.
