hi all[/b]
so once again ive been ripped off by the dealership,
i went to buy a battery for my spare key for the z3, and was charged R101.00, its a simple watch battery, which i found for R9 at the home store in randburg waterfront, ive got the model number of the battery if anyone wants it, k1064 something, but i will get the proper number and it takes 1 minute to diy.

Yup, you can also get a really good Energizer one for R12 at Makro :)

Although, i believe my key doesnt have a battery, is that true? Anyone?
I heard you have to keep rotating keys as the key is charged when you drive the car?

Then was told if it no longer works then you need a whole new key and not just a battery change

BMW also quoted me like R100 for a battery for my 540's key and they didn't even have stock.

I want to do it myself, but I afraid of messing it up as I only have one key. What if I need to have it recoded when I remove the old battery. I heard you have something like 30sec to change it before you need to have it recoded??

they are supposed to be rechargeable (all) when in the car and you supposed to rotate them for that reason...they are all lithium batteries anyhow.

As usual the stealer's always have their hands in our pockets. :hammerhead:

If I am not mistaken the older keys the battery could easily be changed, as the key was made in such a way that the battery could be changed. On the newer keys (the diamond keys and up) the battery is meant to be charged when it is stuck into the ignition barrel. But these batteries are like the "lifetime" oil that BMW use in the diff and gearbox, it eventually needs to be changed. On the diamond keys this can also be done, but it requires the key to be broken open desoldering the battery and soldering in a new one, and then glueing the key shut. In terms of the battery, I can't recall the exact specs but if I am not mistaken RS sells them for something like R30 each.

Hi All

Another question.....:flyfun:

I have two keys for my car, 2003 E46 325i.

The one is a bit finnicky.

I was told the battery was fubar and needed replacing. Went to my local BMW dealer who, with a huge smile, informed me that you cannot change the battery and have to replace the key.
For R3500.00 !!

So I went home and as it is my spare key, opened the unopenable key.
Got the battery out.
It is a Panasonic VL2020 3V coin type Lithium rechargeble battery.
So phoned around, got hold of the importers for Panasonic Japan.

CBI Electric
website: www.cbidcenergy.co.za

They have licences to import almost every single battery made by Panasonic, except for guess which one ???
Yep.
Only people who can import that battery is BMW.

So I would like to know if anyone has had the same and if there are replacement batteries that I can use ?

Thanks again.

If you have the diamond key, I would recommend just replacing the key. Changing the battery can be tricky, and might need recoding. And, you're gonna have a hard time re-sealing the "unopenable" key.

I know a guy who comes out to your house with his cutter, provides you a new key, cuts it, codes it, and tests it all for you, for R1950
