CDV Delete/Mod (Clutch Delay Valve)

Ok so I thought i'd copy my CDV delete/mod posts from my other thread into a seperate thread to get some more attention/feedback.

Has anyone done a CDV delete/mod on their car?

Q: What is a CDV
A: The Clutch Delay Valve (CDV) is something BMW puts in place to limit the flow of hydraulic fluid to the clutch, supposedly to minimize stress to the components. It was introduced around the same time BMW began offering included service that covered clutches.

This image shows how badly the fluid is restricted in our cars.

From the 1Addicts Thread:

What we can do is to delete (remove) this restriced valve from our cars, or simply modify it so that it is less restricted, and noticeable by BMW mechanics.

This is for the E82 135i, but it should be similar if not exactly the same for the E90 models.
Steps:

1. Jack up the front of the car and put it on jackstands (or drive up on ramps).

2. Loosen the eight (8) transmission shroud/cover screws with that 8mm socket. The transmission cover is about directly underneath the shifter. The cover comes off once you remove the 8 screws and twist the cover about 45 degrees to clear the slot shown in Pic 1.

3. climb under three and find the CDV. Pic 2

4. The CDV can either be removed or replaced with an aftermarket free flow modified CDV. I chose to remove it. There's a small metal clip on the CDV, and an identical one on the coupling. See the circled items in pic 3. Also, take a took at a closeup of the CDV in pic 4, to see how to pop the retaining wire out with a small flat bladed screwdriver.

5. Once you have the two retaining wires popped out a bit (as in pic 4), quickly pull out the fluid line going into the CDV, and cap it with your finger. Then, pull out the CDV itself. Then take the fluid line that you have capped with your finger, and plug it into the coupling. You'll lose a bit of fluid, but not that much. Push the retaining wire back in to secure the fluid line in the coupling. It will look like pic 5 when you're done. alternately, install your modified CDV instead of bypassing it.

6. Locate the bleed valve, (pic 6) and unloosen it while you have a cup under it to catch the fluid, and have somebody press the clutch pedal once to the floor, and hold it there, while you tighten the bleed valve.

7. Put the shroud/tranny cover back in place with the 8 screws.

..and you're done! Have a congratulatory beer and admire you're 13375k1z.

You'll notice that the clutch pedal will respond more directly to your input now, and YOU can control how it it let out.

Modify Existing CDV:
What people are doing as to not draw attention to the removal of the CDV is to modify the existing CDV wit a 3mm allen key and a hammer. This removes the valve assembly which restricts the flow of fluid

Then this modified part is re-installed and the dealers will never have reason to check it as it looks normal :)

--------------------------------

I have been reading about the process involved the whole morning and am getting quite familiar with how to do it. The only thing that I think could be tricky is bleeding the clutch after re-fitting the modded CDV or removing the CDV.

Other problem is I don't have proper jack stands/lifts for my car and would not know how to use them properly anyways..

Anyone have some tips for me or could perhaps give a hand in the JHB area?

What about a group CDV mod/delete? Can all meet somewhere where we have all the tools and can do it together / give each other a hand etc.

The steps for the E46 are similar to the above, but as far as I know you cannot modify the existing CDV as easily as the E82/E90 one.. Just delete (remove) it rather.

Leave it in there, its there for a reason.
Besides the reduced life expectancy of your clutch, flywheel, gearbox and rubber propshaft coupling, what gains do you get from removing it?

Smoother shifting.. Especially in my car, 1st to 2nd is quite bumpy.. Some people are swearing by this thing...

Yeah but are clutches not covered by BMW Motor Plan? Besides, people reckon it won't do anything really to wear.. Read some posts about it.. Will try and find the links

I already did mine way back when.. makes a BIG difference on fast shifting...

Go and check www.uucmotorwerks.com for details

M@!

 I would modify my existing CDV.. The only problem is the lack of lifts/proper jack stands, knowledge on how to use them, and knowledge of how to properly bleed the clutch after fitting the modded CDV...

Any tips? :)

I just binned the old one and got a longer connector... or I ordered something from UUC.. or something.. dont' remember....

BTW this mod does NOTHING to the wear and tear.. the CDV is a granny device fitted for all those wankers who stall manual cars cause they don't know how to slip the clutch.

you dont need to buy anything to do the delete. you either punch out the inside, or just remove it from the line completely(the input side is male, and the output is female)

lol @kabal ,notion did you read the original post? :thinker: :nono:

anyways, i mentioned both of those things :)

group CDV would be cool. especially since our clutch is exactly the same Notion ;) shotgun not first tho :) haha

@clutchplate - i knew someone here was going to laugh at me... :) i'm sure it's a real simple thing but we all start somewhere I guess :) after this it will be very simple :) thanks man really appreciate your help such as the last time you helped with the cone filter (ROFL!) ..thinking back on it now.. what a noob i was haha

whoever's keen to do a group CDV delete/mod let me know here so we can organise! If you have a lift or tools we can use to lift the car up safely that would be even better!
