CATS

Hi All,

I have a 528i, 98 model. On ocassion, while driving, the car will loose power. When i put it in N and rev the engine, it chokes at about 3500 / 4000rpm, fully floored. I was advised that the CATS might be causing the problem and to cut them out and replace it with standard pipes. Firstly could this be the cause and secondly will this affect the car in any way.

Thanks

as far as i know the cause is a list of many things dirty fule air dust ect:cursin: and i have asked the same question regaurding the cat removal and they told me it wont harm your car you might even gain some performance:thumbsup:, but their is a chage in the tone of your car sounds differant so i would say cut them out my 520 has no cats, over seas they have noise levels and ecco levels that car manufaturing has to abide by so thats in my apinion why they have cats? maybe someone else could help shed more light on this but thats all i have....

sorry my spelling is bad i know.:mmm:

Hi,

Thanks, I did some more research, and they say its one of three things now. 1. The CATS, 2. The Fuel Pump or 3. There is a vacum canister in the tank that might be creating too much vacum that is holding back the fuel.

Well im goig to start with the cheapest option.......Remove the CATS:wave:

Cats can be described as an extra combustion chamber in the exhaust!
All it basically does is burn the HC, CO , O2 and NO in the exhaust again!
The catalytic converter doesn't work when it is cold. It has to be above 400*C (750*F) to operate properly!

Its a tree-way cat coz it lowers 3 harmfull exhaust gasses CO, HC and NOx.

In the process the empty hand of the CO grabs the O from the NO to make CO2. The N is now alone and finds another N to hold hands with. so CO and NO becomes harmless CO2 and N2..

The sound is controlled with boxes!

I was also told that my cats are due for replacement but the price on a new cat is crazy. What would be recommended to replace the cat with ? And what would the estimated price range be ?

I know.... Its terrible. They go from being all cute and fuzzy with their big blue eyes. Then they kill a few things. Have children. Next thing you know your cat is lying on its back, legs in the air. Dead.

And boy are cats expensive. R10 000 for a Persian cat and that isnt even a top of the range model?!

Pathetic. This is why it is better to remove the cat from the living space. Just dont harm the dog sensor.

Had exact same sickness, removed cats 2 weeks ago, sounds raspy now but performs correctly again. Gonna have freeflow fitted
