Castrol 10w 60 for E36 M3

FYI guys:
From an oil specialist:
"If your car is being used for mostly street use then you could use Mobil 1 0w40. For a balanced track and street use Shell Helix Ultra 5w40, it has high zinc and phosphorous contents which you want for wear resistance and load bearing. The VI of that oil is 187...You will be hard pressed to find another oil with such a high viscosity index. The VI tells you how much the oil "thins" as it is loaded with heat and mechanical stress, a high VI means it stays more consistent and doesnt burn so easily and it doesnt readily get so thin that metal to metal contact can occur. Dont be mislead by flash points, they are done by either PMCC method or COC and with different ASTM methods (typically D92 or D93) rather ignore this number...With Helix Ultra 5w40 you can go 15 000 to 20 000 km on a heavily tuned car making big power. On mobil 1 0w40, probably 15 000km to be safe... If you use the car extensively for tract work my advice is use Castrol Edge 10w60, its not fully synthetic but is very robust, BMW use this exclusively in their M cars...But dont go more than 7500 -10 000km on this oil, when it does burn it will leave deposits.
As a general rule of thumb, only use an oil if its 5w40 WITH (this is vitally important) a VI of over 170. That way you know it is a true PAO/ester based synthetic and its not bound to low emission engines, those oils are bad for wear but good for emissions. With the Supra, I'm sure you dont really care about emissions. One other thing, you want a sulphated ash content of 1.1% - 1.5%, this is an indicator of detergent and dispersant additives in the oil and are a very good thing!
I hope this helps and that you find an oil that makes you happy. I have used Shell Helix Ultra in every car I own, except our diesels which run Shell Rimula R6m 10w40 synthetic. My ST225 06' which I owned from new uses Helix ultra and to this day NEVER requires a top up between 20 000km intervals, I have almost 190 000km on the car, zero turbo problems, making 208wkw and its been running mods since 6 months of me owning it way back in 06'."

Ok I'm sooo confused as to what oil to use now. :bangdesk:
Currently I run tws. Run 100 to 105 oil temps with a little spirited driving, so don't like the oil to heat up so much. I think that my oil cooler is the problem because when I got the car with the same oil I ran 90 deg. And when trashing it 100. Any advise?

Ok I used the car extensively this weekend and on really hot days. My oil temp never went pass 90. Does take 5 mins to warm up to that point.
100 is still safe. The manual says spirited driving can see temp go up to 130 but any higher I would be concerned.

My experience with my last S54 was that the LM was quieter than the TWS. This was obviously compared to the old TWS that was in there (with +/- 5000km), so don't know if new TWS would have had the same effect.
If quiet automatically equals better protection, I really cant tell.
for the s54 10w 60 is best it is designed to run on molasses :rollsmile:
I know at the drag strip some guys are using 5w 40 or even 5w 30 on the s54 to make more power because they are short runs... but this would damage your engine if driven on the street and does not make for a stable oil choice on this engine...

From my experiences with the S54, TWS and Liqui Moly GT1.
The Liqui moly is a better oil.
The motor is quieter and oil temps are lower, with Castrol temps would go up to as much as 110-120 degrees celsius with very spirited driving, liqui moly however doesn't pass 100 degrees 105 max.
I also noticed it needed to be topped up regularly while using Castrol TWS.
On one trip to P.E from JHB the dip stick would drop to +/- 3/4 so I'd always travel with a 1L in the boot.
The Liqui Moly however a totally different case, I did a oil change 9000km ago and in that 9000 I went to P.E twice it hasn't used a drop of oil.

I'm a firm believer in using the best oil for the motor wrt it's requirements and the way you use it.
Used only Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 to top up an Alfa V6 that I ran very hard and at 200,000km the engine if anything felt stronger than when new, pity diff not so much... exploded like a hand grenade lunching the gearbox :..(. It consumed maybe 200ml per 1000kms.
I always try use small throttle inputs and revs below 3k rpm until oil temp indicates close to 90 deg C (sometimes takes over 10kms) but once temps are correct I tend to drive in an "enthusiastic" fashion
So don't mind nursing car till she's warm to ensure the motor has the proper protection at high rpm and temps.
With the long stroke, very high piston speeds and potential bearing issues of the S54 at high temps running on thinner oil will rather only use the correct thick 10W-60. (Engine still in good condition, car has used no oil in 2000km's including a trip up the West Coast with sustained high rpm and engine loads)
However bought a bottle of Edge Sport 10W- 60 to keep in boot for any necessary top ups. Did not know it isn't the proper ester based 10W-60 TWS that is better for the way I use the car.
Is TWS really only available from the stealers? Haven't found any Edge Professional or TWS at normal petrol stations. Based in CT.

Goldwagen should be able to help you out with TWS... Or have a chat to Moranor and get some Liqui Moly 10W-60 GT Race Synth - it's up to spec with TWS, if not better.
On a side note, Shell has now been appointed the official oil supplier for BMW, which means they'll soon have a TWS type formulation out to market.
They released a 10W-60 Helix Ultra Race oil not too long ago, which is advertised as being on par with TWS and up to the task of running in an //M cars / high heat racing conditions... and I know Goldwagen stocks that as well.

I chatted to the parts department at Alberante and they say all the dealerships are changing to shell in January. I however have changed over to Liqui Moly and it's the only oil I use on mine and customers cars now. Still need to flush out the castrol in my touring when she comes back from ARC though.

i have no choice but to use 10w60 pro,car takes 9liters at around R200 a liter.
these V10 motors are so expensive ,i have the fear of God in me so wont take any chances.
