I am using the liqui moly atm. But after long hours reading online it seems my engine is better off with the 0w40 due to the bearing clearences. Will confirm that after a change and running the car for a while

Re read the whole thread, I'm amazed that some cars never go over 100 deg C.

The Z4M on average seems to run around 5-10 deg cooler than the E46M (understandably with more space and cooling)

The Z4M went up to a max of 110deg C yesterday tracking around Zwartkops in one session. Not pushing that hard either. 7000-7500rpm shifting.

Oh and the car is still running TWS 10w60 (3900km old)

I have an e36 m3 my car always stable at 90c in all conditions. there was once when it sat at 80c but that was just once on a random day.

I use Shell HX7 10w40 car drives smooth and does not burn oil, I never or almost never top up, at least I don't have to as the car does not burn up the oil much.

Question: what would the pros and/or cons be if I swap from current oil to Liqui Moly 10W-60?

Isn't it also due to electric fan vs viscous fan? Electric fan can vary its speed even in the pits. Viscous is RPM dependant and can only spin at idle speed while sitting in the pits.

hey Gents

My guy that services my car uses 10w 60 Castrol. I found that my E35 M3 3.0 was a lot quieter. I have driven over 2000km since the car was serviced and she is still running like a dream and very quiet.

The previous owner had the car serviced at a service garage and they used Shell 15w 40.

i feel more at ease pushing the car harder now than what i did before. i find it to be very nice. even on a blistering hot drive, at 140kmh, i found that she stayed at 95degrees

I have been using Castrol 10W-60 since January on my E36 M3 and oil temps have never passed the 90 mark despite me really gunning it in some blistering heat here in Cape Town. According to enquiries, Garage 808 also uses 10W-60 on E36 M3's. Oh, and not a noticeable drop of consumption...I still have a sealed Liter in my boot.

I'm on the same with my car.
Goes above 100 on track and then only to 110, although I am running very new Luiqi Moly

Z4M only has Electric fan (no viscous) and E46M3 has both Electric and viscous. That and the tight fitting I'm sure makes a difference, I'm just thinking it's normal for the oil temp to go up to 110deg in intense use. For either car.

I can't comment on the E36 unfortunately

The electric fan in front of the radiator on the e46 M3 actually impedes airflow to the radiator as it only runs when aircon is on or when the viscous isn't cooling the car sufficiently. Z4 has no such restrictions.

Hmmm now I wish I didn't open this thread -.-
I've read this now for the 3rd time and still haven't reached a verdict as to what to use for my e92.

From what I can tell the 10w60 (BMW recommended) is the safe way to go.

Branding summary (from what I can tell)
10w60 Castrol is no good ?
Liqui moli or tws is the way to go ... ?

* re-opens can of worms :tiptoe:

I am not advocating on the use of any particular oil however I prefer Liqui Molly.

TWS/Castrol oils for some reason create sludge.

For the s50B30 and S50B32 one can safely use 0W40/or 5W40
For the S54 10W60

The V8s 0W40 although 10W60 is specified by the factory.

Out of a matter of interest are any of the E36 M3 guys still using 10W60 and how are your cars coping on the grade?

My car is due for a service with APS (Anton Slabbert) and he is insisting I continue with 10w60.

hey bud

I still use 10w 60 and Anton.. LOL I don't have any problems with either. I have driven my car to Mosselbay 4 times in 2 months and only topped up once and that was using at 150ml plus minus.. and I wasn't driving slow either. Genuinely, you cant go wrong with Anton and his advice. he hasn't steered me or Fiekie wrong. he is basically our Peter and Gizmo here in Cape Town

other thing, has anyone tried out OB1 additive. apparently its not as hard on the plugs like NF Ultra and cleans off carbon off valves and then cleans out the injectors..
