Of course a question already asked by many, but a new car buyer is going to be taxed on emissions based on the car being purchased while owners of very old wrecks for cars are continuing on as normal. I think it is in Japan where cars older than 5 years have to be replaced with a new/newer car - hence all of the young ex-Japan cars in Australia and New Zealand, and even some EVOs and Supras probably sitting in Durban's port! This may be a bit harsh because then my "newly" bought 330i would be passed its time, but cars older than say 10 - 15 years should be more carefully monitored. In England they have the MOT test which I gather has to be conducted each year in order to ensure good condition and low emissions. But somehow I can't see a system like this working here - most of the "wrecks" on the road are probably not even licensed, forget about being road worthy on not, they're getting away with it... Oh well, I feel sorry for new car purchases - tax on an already heavily taxed purchase! :mmm:
