R75 per g/km for each g/km above 120 g/km

Average about 2% on the cost of the car, not as terrible as I had previously thought.

It does pay to buy expensive, cause a R350k car gets a R5k tax whilst a R150k car is R6.5k. But id all depends on the g/km as mentioned in post #2.

Of course a question already asked by many, but a new car buyer is going to be taxed on emissions based on the car being purchased while owners of very old wrecks for cars are continuing on as normal. I think it is in Japan where cars older than 5 years have to be replaced with a new/newer car - hence all of the young ex-Japan cars in Australia and New Zealand, and even some EVOs and Supras probably sitting in Durban's port! This may be a bit harsh because then my "newly" bought 330i would be passed its time, but cars older than say 10 - 15 years should be more carefully monitored. In England they have the MOT test which I gather has to be conducted each year in order to ensure good condition and low emissions. But somehow I can't see a system like this working here - most of the "wrecks" on the road are probably not even licensed, forget about being road worthy on not, they're getting away with it... Oh well, I feel sorry for new car purchases - tax on an already heavily taxed purchase! :mmm:

Funny approach by the big guys towards advertising and the new carbon tax:

BMW states that you will save a bunch on the new tax simply because their cars are so efficient and environmentally friendly.

Merc on the other hand leads their advertising campaign by saying that you should buy a Merc NOW (before Sept 1st) to prevent paying the new tax.

Priceless deduction I can make from Merc's green status...

I think this carbon tax is a scam. It is just another way to rip off the already overburdened taxpayer. There is no concrete proof that CO2 is causing global warming! The government should definitely be taken to court on this one! How are they going to proof beyond a reasonable doubt that co2/car emissions has any negative impact on anything? Secondly, what are they going to do with this money? Even if they would try to use this tax money for countering co2 emissions, what are they going to do? Could they prove in a court of law that this tax money could be implemented to reverse co2 emissions? What about the enormous taxes levied on carbon based fuels already? This is a blatant rip off people. If we just allow the govt to rip us off on this one then we're to blame...

I'm getting delivery of a new 2011 135i DTC full sports package next week. The car was purchased for R500k and its Carbon emission tax is R8072 just to give you an indication.

Will post pics once arrived.

I'll have to change my nick as well....perhaps steve135i?
