Car unstable on road, when driving over bumps.

Hey guys, im new to this forum and am trying to figure out my problem which im having with my 2005 bmw 320d e90...no one was able to help me yet.

Whenever the car runs on various bumps or potholes the steerijg wheel shifts to the side and either comes back to its original position or takes the car flying off the road. The same happens on roads outside of the city at 90km/h +...the car is sometimes uncontrolable...if i took my hands off of the wheel for few seonds the car would pull to the side and i would crash. Even when im getting out or going into the garage through a little angle i can feel the steering wheel pull to the side and then going back to its previous position.

NOW!! The problem is that I have replaced the entire suspension including rods, arms, steering caps, shocks..well everything...wheels are good, calibrated and when put on my parents bmw e90 318i 2008 tge car doesnt move a bit on the roads where my goes flying off them. I have of course performed a full allignment of all four wheels.

I am thinking the control rod or the power steering pump may be shot. Guys, can you please provide some insight, if you have experienced something simillar? I haven't found anything simillar on the internet tgat is why im posting a new thread. I'm desperate

Thank you for any advice.

I have replaced both tie rods they are brand new and it didnt help...the feel im getting from it is as if something was loose or not holding the entire steering system tightly and thats why it makes the wheels turn...imagine an old car without power steering and how the steering wheel behaves differently than power steering.

P.S. the steering is very tough on my bmw....compared to the 318i 2008...also the suspension is a lot harder...my other guess was wheather the springs can't be somehow worn out...my local mechanic is stunned by this just as I am.

What about the front control arms and bushings and rear trailing arm rubbers?

+1

This solved my problem.

I have an e36 but still..

When taking a corner with a lot of small little bumps the whole back slides out.

Had similar symptoms
As mentioned above, LCAB's and RTAB's sorted my issue

What exactly are LCABs and RTABs?? :)

The front I rrplaced all 4 arms...and it is not an issue of the back part of the car this is distinctively something with the steering mechanism or some sort..at least it feels like it.

easiest way to diagnose front control arm bushings (caster bushing):

park the car... keep steering wheel straight. go to the front wheel.. and put your foot onto the front tyre tread closest to the bumper side..and push the tyre back (towards the back of the car). if your wheel moves too much, that bushing needs to be replaced.

if the bushings are really bad, when you brake you'll feel the car pull to the side.. even at extremely slow speeds. if theres someone standing outside.. they'll see something like this:

When last did you change your shocks?had the same problem, and replacing all 4 shocks with konis solved my problem.

Hi, front shocks were changed in november and the rear shocks were changed 2 weeks ago...allt he other parts that were needed were changed as well...i dont know how they are called but the front shocks go through it at the top and the springs hold between it and the shock...the only thing there i could see is bad springs

Even if parts were changed... Do you trust the people/person who installed?

Jack the wheel up and firmly move the wheel left and right. Also put your hands top and bottom and move the wheel. Feel for play. You will need to use some force. When you find the wheel that has play then look for which part has the play. These cars are sensitive to the quality of parts used. The issue you are having is mostly caused by control arms. Perhaps the control arm bushes have not been installed properly or the new part has failed.

I just remembered once my cousin was having this issue on e46. The car was under plan. Everything got replaced. Nothing worked until the tires needed to be changed. Because of vastly different thread patterns on a staggered wheel set created a problem but only as the tires started to wear out.

Hey guys,
thank you all for your replies. Yes, I trust the guy as I was with him through the ordering process and the instalation process. All parts are of greater quality not the cheap ones...the issue is exactly the same as it was before replacing the control arms, etc...so i doubt that there could be a new part failure...I gues that I could try replacing the shocks...however they are quite new and seem totally fine. I guess there must be something loose inside in the center of the control rod or something...its as if a bit higher surface like a slope onto a pavement, when driving onto it with one wheel, makes both wheels turn to the side at once. :(

If you car is shifting in most cases the problem would be the trailing arm bushes. I had mine replaced thrice and it didnt change anything. It depends on the make/quality of the part. When i did it myself using febi parts the problem was solved. Shops rip u off.

i've had the same problem, replaced about everything i could on my 330d E90. and to my surprise after still having the issues and much digging, i found it to be my steering rack that was shot. was leaking fluid that you couldn't see which was causing the control arm bolts to go loose.

would of never suspected that to be the issue. anyway, after 228k km something was bound to make a balls up.
