Im going to say sell it..

Nice car good smooth engine.. buuutttt nowhere near todays standards i terms of performance fuel economy and safety...

If you get double trade pr double retail go for it.. being so much in demand you should charge a small premium for it..

Get a new 320i and you'll be the happiest guy.. performance, economy, and above all MOTORPLAN..

Good luck with your decision..

Problem is we get too attached to cars especially good cars that have been with us for many years...

I have a F30 328i and I have to say the performance is similar maybe not exactly the same as my old E46 M3 SMG and that’s a 2.0lt 4 cylinder engine add a DP and Software and it will kill the E46 M3
And probably my E39 M5 as well

Truth is modern tech is surpassing the older tech...

I had the E39 3.0 petrol manual and it’s nothing special to be honest

Only the M cars are special but that’s because it’s a M car... holds more nostalgia appeal

The E46 3.0lt is a nice workhorse motor - but really nothing special.

Far rather have the E36 3.0 M3 motor to be honest...

I can’t see the normal E46 BMWs getting anything decent in terms of pricing - thing is as always what do you buy for R60k+ nothing really so car with decent KMs and condition are always fetching a bit more...

The 3.0D motor is a much better motor imho miles more torque and miles better fuel consumption and reliable...

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the f30 320i economy is not really a selling feature. Take the claimed figure and double it.

I test drove a new 320i and 320d mainly to test the M Sport suspension stiffness and I must say the 320i is a absolute dog in Performance compared to the 320d and when I drove out the dealership with my 328i I actually started to appreciate my car more..

I’d rather buy the 320d over the 320i and if difference is price is an issue get a slightly older 320d to balance the price

My 328i is very quick for a 2.0lt 4 cylinder it hauls ass - that being said it’s thirsty around town but diesel like on the open road

If fuel consumption isn’t a big thing (10lts per 100) then get the 328i M-Sport with the sport gearbox and M-Performance exhaust

Otherwise get the 320d same spec - very nice car as well save about 3lts per 100 compared to the 328i

The car has got to be neat, original and honest to become a collectors car.

Further more, you have to wait 10 years from now. Are you prepared to wait?

Remember add up the insurance cost, and a bit of maintence here and there.... you can't not service it for 10 years...

Also it's going to take up storage space somewhere as well...

Use the above info and make a decision.

I don’t think any E46 cars apart from the CSL M3 and normal M3 will ever be collectors cars - you will get the rare extremely low KMs E46 but those will get retail and maybe a little more...

E30 sales have shown us that engine size and overall condition makes no difference as all e30 models good and bad have shot up in value and price. Who is to say e36 and e46 models won't follow suit in the years to come?

Well if vanilla e36s are anything to go by, I would say the vanilla e46s are still a LOOOONG way from increasing in value

Well it did take 28 or so years for E30 to get there. So E46 probably 10-15 years away from a material increase in value.. possibly a bit sooner

Not saying its not going to happen.
Simply saying that the OP should not hold his breath.
His children might benefit from him mothballing his e46, but its probably not going to work out quite like a medium term investment

i think the individuals will fetch more in the future..330ci individual..325ci individual..330i individual and in good shape. nice extras like 18" individual wheel & satnav HK sound etc.

Exactly. Would the 325is even have an investment? Factor in inflation, insurance, maintenance etc. it’s only because there are so few of these low mileage good condition ‘special’ cars that they are fetching decent money. Also the e30 will be worth more quicker due to lower production numbers. I don’t see the e36 or e46 going the same way in my lifetime.
Don’t keep old ones for profit, but drive them, enjoy them and appreciate them! If you make a buck or 2 when you sell, bonus! But when you find such gems why sell them?

I honestly agree with the above ^^ Not sure that they will be serious collectors items, production numbers need to be low.. Yes the N/A 6pot is long dead from production, but people will be after the M variant as the true collectors item. My 2c on this.

325is expample:

New Price in 1991: R105 000
Mint Condition one now +/- R300 000 or Even R400 000

If you invested R105 000 with a 8% return over 26 years you would have
R776 000 and some change. This excludes maintenance, insurance, storage etc over the 105 000 purchase price.

So as an investment you would have been better of keeping your R105K in an investment.

I dont think that normal production cars will be investments unless the rand falls to shit and you are able to export them for foreign exchange

I think the E30’s popularity was enhanced by the spinners in the townships “Gusheshe” the E36 and E46 don’t have that sort of icon stature...

I don’t foresee the E36 and E46 outside the M models and individual models holding any sort of value...
