I first really came to notice the E39 when I was around 13 years old, if not a bit older. I lived in Mossel Bay at the time and my neighbour, who had only built his house next door to ours after we moved down there from Joburg, had a 1997 E39 540i steptronic. Maroon in colour, with cream interior. It had aftermarket rims on, which didn't bother me as the car was the best thing I had ever seen in my life at the time, and the rims looked good on her. I wanted to do nothing more but stare at this car all day long. We lived on a steep uphill and so I would often get to hear that V8 rumble pull up the road with my neighbour on his way to work.
I was lucky enough to catch a lift with him at times and sat in awe as he put his foot down, the quiet engine then cruising from 80 km/h, now suddenly roaring into life and sprinting down an empty road, reaching 250 km/h. It felt like I was in a super comfortable jet. The scenery a blur.
I couldn't get enough of the speed, the acceleration, the comfort, and the sheer beauty of the car.
That's when I decided...
I had to have one.
The day I first took her for a drive.
At the time I bought her, I had a Jetta mk3 CLI 2.0 8v. I had been looking around and climbing into E39's for a few months. I never really had the intention of buying one just yet, especially not a V8. The 2.0 liter Jetta was heavy enough on fuel, but I went with a friend, Wayne, from dealer to dealer, still in awe of the E39's standing around. Every time I got into one, I thought to myself "I have to have one".
Wayne and I would spend hours looking around on the web at cars for sale, to pass time and what not. He then stumbled upon an advert placed by Fourbuy Wholesale, a Land Rover specialist in Fourways. It was for an E39 530d M-sport, traded in buy a man who wanted an SUV. He said we should go look at it. I thought "ag okay, why not. Maybe I can score a drive".
When I went to view her, the dealer had only just opened that day after the festive season close. The salesman and owner, the only guy who works there apart from staff who wash cars and do stock organising etc, was a bit busy and so he gave me the keys and told me to take it for a spin. Wayne was with me, so we left my car there and off we went. Man oh man. I had to have it. I didn't want to buy a car then, but THIS ONE I had to have. The interior was spotless, apart from slight age related wear. No broken bits. No heavy stains. Anthracite lining. Black leather. Wood grain trim. Sport steering...
This car had everything I wanted that my Jetta couldn't offer; remote access, electric windows, sunroof, leather interior, diesel consumption, etc etc etc.
I wanted it. With no intention of actually buying it, I bought it. I was out of my mind. My Jetta I bought myself but from family friends. This BMW, however, was my first ever buy from a dealer. My first proper financed vehicle. I didn't know what I was doing.
I thought if I really do want one of these, it might as well be the diesel as the fuel consumption of the V8 would kill me, even though I really wanted the 540i. And so it was mine. I bought myself the car I had been wanting for around a decade.
Her first trip down to Mossel Bay
I kept the mods to a minimum. Apart from BMWFanatics stickers and semi-smoked tail lights, I have done no visual mods to this car. Rims are still original.
Mechanically, the only mods I have done are the swirl flaps (they needed to come out) and the EGR block-off along with the vacuum pipe story.
And then... A software remap which gave me plenty more power and much better fuel consumption.
Sometimes I cannot believe that I actually own an E39, even after a year of ownership. This car is really special to me and I hope that I may never have to sell it. Most other youngsters my age all want small, fast hatchbacks such as GTI's and ST's. Me? I wanted a big BMW. Comfort and luxury combined with power.
I don't care how fast I get from A to B. I want to enjoy the drive. And in my E39, I couldn't enjoy it more.
Thanks
