im about to buy an 2004 e46 m3 smg did a check on the history of the car at bmw and the smg pump was replaced about 2 years ago is this normal?? and it had a update on the smg software, other than that the car seems like a good deal. i know this topic probably covered before, but is there anything else i should look out for?

thanks in advance :thumb:

OK i can tell what i know. bmw had a problem with smg box and what was the problem, you guessed it, it was the pump in the smg box, i would say it is perfectly normal most m3 smg's pumps were replaced and box got new software. its good thing atleast you know yours was done.

I stand to be corrected

These boxes did give some problem on the smgs...however it just depends on the car, the driver and your luck i think. generally on these cars you will have to replace the rear sensor which is located at the top rear section of the box...on the outside of the box. the cost to replace this sensor is about 7grand from BMW...symptoms of this giving problem will be the car not sensing the speed in some gears, jumping gears like from 2 to 4th when changing up and also slipping into neutral when you stop....intermittent problem that just gets really bad then you have to change the sensor....the second problem is the pump which is situated at the front...and this is also replaced at about 5grand from bmw...symptoms here would be no kick in the gears when driving in S5 or S6 mode....(you will not get the quickshit and kick from the gears if you pull the car to the rev limiter). the car will have a slow automatic feel change....this too will be intermittent...these would be the only two issues you would have from the box....you lucky the pump is changed...should feel nice through the gears.

if you have any problems...just let me know...help you out...we make a plan for you ese...anything for an M3 drive.
