brakes

HI Folks,
I drive E12 520, 1981 Model, I have changed my brake pads on the past weekend, and, as always, bleed them but to my surprise
this time
I was not lucky enough. When I start the engine the car does not brake at all. The brake booster sounds as its leaking air, also the engine idling increases. I took the booster to engineers for service - picked it up yesterday and fitted but dito. A friend told me that it could be a valve that is connected on top of the rockers cover to the booster. Please advice :banghead::banghead:

Hi Bheki,

Please look at the image attached. It is a pic of the engine bay of a E12 518i, but the setup for the brakes should be similar.

Firstly, check the hose - after 29 years (if the hose is still original) chances are good that it has become perished and is leaking air.

Then, check the valve (highlighted) for damage. If you want to be safe, a regular spares shop should be able to supply such a valve. Also, check the connection of the hose to both the booster and the inlet manifold.

By the way, when bleeding the brakes, does the brake pedal become stiff? If it does not become stiff when bleeding the brakes, your culprit there is the master brake cylinder. If the booster was at fault, it should not affect the operation of the master brake cylinder.

I hope this helps.
