Brake Pads

I will have to change the brake pads on my E70 X5 in the next 1000km. What brand should I get? What brand does BMW use? I know what they charge R1700 for a front set. Was wondering what my options were if I don't go through a dealer.

Ferodo seems to be an option :fencelook::fencelook:

what condition are the discs in, ie have you got a ridge/lip on them, replacing pads when the disc has got a noticable lip, will reduce the life of the pads.

has your "replace brake pads" indicator come on ?...new sensor will then also be required.

Do yourself a favour.
Check out G Drive Automotive website first.
I've just replaced front and back with Meyles pads for R1200 including sensors.

Delivered to my front door and very happy with the product.

BMW OE is made in Italy

EMI Auto Parts Are Official Stockists Of The Metelli Brake Pad Range. It too is made in Italy so you can sum it up,OEM QUALITY!:praise:

We supplied MEYLE & FEBI in the past but they are too noisy,Dry Pad!:blab:

You could also check Powerbrake, had good reports on the Forum. Not sure whether they do brakes for the X5 though.

ATE pads is OEM. Get from Midas.

Sent from a tiekiebox.

That is correct, ATE is OEM and AFAIK they are fitted here at the Rosslyn plant as well as other local plants for other manufacturers. You can also try Ferodo and Safeline, have experience with all three and you can't go wrong with those.

I would also recommend ATE.

My uncle is a mechanic by trade and they moved from Ferodo to ATE as lots of people have been complaining on the noise of Ferodo.
This is due to the hard compound that is used.

ATE is OEM as far as I know. On my car there are ATE logos stamped on the OEM calipers and brake fluid reservoir. Replaced my disks and pads last year with ATE and so far I can't fault them.

Yup, thats correct. BMW OE is ATE. Same as my MINI. Though I only use Ferodo DS Range as its has a softer compound and doesn't fade/heat up as much. Actually changing my rears next week, but need to get a sensor from BMW first. Any idea who else stocks sensors for MINI's?

Hi all,

i'm not sure what oem is on the e70, but the e46's came with Jurid (rear) and Textar (front) pads as oem.

ATE is oem on the caliper.

Over the years i've used OEM (as above), Ferodo's, ATE's, Safeline and Meyle.

i would rather go for OEM, ATE or Safeline. Haven't really "enjoyed" both the Ferodo or Meyle pads.

Plus point: ATE and Safeline are available at less cost as well.

Thank you all for your input :ty:

The general consensus does seem to be to use ATE. I had a look at the pads and discs through the wheel spokes but could not differentiate the make. I take it it is ATE. There is a small lip on the outer edge of the brake disc but this thankfully won't have to be changed just yet. I know Ferodo is probably the most used aftermarket pads but will prefer to stick to OE where possible. Pads will need doing in about a 1000km time. Will keep you posted how it goes.

Not all the BMW pads are from ATE, some are from Jurid and other manufacturers.

I will find out what make the pads are, hopefully it will be one that is widely available as the dealers charge a fortune.
