BMW320d catalytic converter

Hi Guys - need some help and advice. I have a 320d 2002 bought it on 140 000 km it is now 215 000km lately the car has less power than before. The turbo is fine and now the mechanic sais it is the catalytic converter because it has never been changed since I bought it and neither by previous owners. I have also been told that you can remove it without replacing it with a new one as the car does not really need it.
Is this possible?? and if I need to replace it does any of you guys know where and how much??

Yes you can there are some guys on the forum that will tell you were to go.

Just make sure you don't go to a cheapie exhaust garage. They will somehow cock it up. Made that mistake once. :thumbdo:

the catalytic convertor does not need to be replaced after a certain time/milage, only replace it if it has become blocked.

that said, removing it is not a bad idea from a performance and turbo longlivity viewpoint..

I had the cats removed by Supaquick here in Hermanus and they did a splendid job for very little money (i know the owner of the branch). They took off the exhaust and cut open the cats and knocked them out and rewelded the exhaust and fitted it. Does not even sound louder. The cats were absolutely clean and dry even after 220k km on the car.

If you have a 320d, I assume your talking about the diesel particulate filter. There have been a few threads about this topic. There are a few guys who will be able to assist you.

:idea: The diesel particle filter does not need replacement and is so that once the car picks up that the filter reached a percentage of blockage it go's into a cleaning cycle usually when you take longer trips and the engine revs are running constant. it will burn the particles and your engine will run on a bit higher temp for the duration of the cleaning process.

You will also smell the filter burning but it is all got to do with the cleaning process.

ok seriously.. for once and for all..

1998 to 2004 320d/330d do NOT have particulate fiters! only catalytic convertors. (south african cars )

e90 320d and 330d have particulate fiters with INTEGRATED catalytic convertors inside the SAME CANISTER as the particulate filter..

Hubby did mine at Noise boys. Now doing better on fuel and getting better performance.
