discussion BMW X5 GO5 Reliability and Maintenance

Hi guys, I hope everyone is well.

My cousin is interested in purchasing an SUV, and this past weekend we came across a 2019 BMW X5 xDrive30d with 70,000 km.

The X5 is a strong contender for him, but he is concerned about reliability and maintenance costs, especially as the vehicle no longer has a motorplan.

Could anyone advise on the typical service and maintenance costs, as well as any common reliability issues to look out for?

He drives around 15,000 km per year and plans to keep the vehicle for approximately 5 years.

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone knows of a 2019 X5 xDrive30d with around 50,000–70,000 km for sale, please let me know.

The rules for this are simple:
1. Every new gen of BMW has a worse build quality than the generation before it. This is a fact. I am not talking about engine compression, how many turbos or what iDrive it has. I am talking build quality. Once you understand that, your frame of reference is changed and things will make more sense.
2. The G05 X5 has a reasonable build quality but there are a few things I have noticed.
2a. The transfer case on this chassis has not been upgraded since the original BMW X5 was launched. This puts much more weight and torque on an assembly than it is designed to handle. Google BMW G05 X5 transfer case class action and you will see what i am talking about.
2b. The leather quality is shocking, again google it, even the top of the line option is worse than what was standard in an E90. Its noticeably thinner and definitely worse than actual cow-hide, dont fall for all that Vegan BS.
2c. The sunroof seals dont seal, 1000s of owners have had leaks as the seals shrink over time and leak, damaging the telematics unit.
2d. The DRL light bulbs are not heat shielded from the light tubes themselves and suffer from burning, melting and yellow shit looking DRLs.

For all the above, BMW has service bulletins - which is BMWs way of acknowledging a known manufacturing defect and offering to solve it ONLY under MP. once youre out, youre out in the cold and the above are your dramas.

The 30d is a very reliable engine and provided you service it annually (not based on the service indicator). Service it annually and check the transfer case fluid, diff fluids and keep an eye on the EGR and DPF you wont have problems anymore than is likely on a high performance german car.

I want to add that many BMWs in this current generation DO NOT have sliding/tilting sunroofs because of point 2c below. They knew they could not guarantee these issues so glass roof is now panoramic but fixed. I noticed this on the G99 and the sales person mentioned this to me the other day. Apart from the sealing issue, there was the issue of rattles that they could never quite solve either.

What is fascinating is that the F10, Exx and even Mercs of years past have sunroofs that may require some maintenance now and then (greasing/the lifters on the tilt mechanism) but for the most part still work 10/20/30 years on.

Edited to add: @Nastaliq and I have seen this quality decline first hand having owned 5ers over multiple generations and having had E series cars as well. Even the quality of carpet is different. The B&W metal speaker grilles in my F90 for instance have made way for plastic rattly stuff in the new G90.

The other issue is the lighting. ALREADY in my F90 I've mentioned a LIN bus issue on the lighting on the rear that requries a few thousand rands thrown at it to fix. I would love to know what it is going to cost when the 90's club chic of the new models starts to go wrong...

This makes my consideration of an F15 30d for next year even stronger. Genuinely think they are one of the best value for money SUVs around.
I will agree with you a 100%, looking at WIDEOPN's car, it does not even show any of the 98k mileage he put on there. The interior and exterior age so well.
Sometimes I see these F15s with well over 200k mileage and look very similiar and that shows the quality they hold on them.

It is astounding as to some conditions of vehicles which are even younger and newer these days...the quality aspect just pops through so easily at first glance.

I have driven this car on a few occasions, but not owned one, I found the steering heavy, but when you correct for the Tare weight, it all makes sense.
The thing is a tank but makes my point about previous Gen cars yet again, stronger thicker metal, heavier engine block, more sound deadening and thicker everything.

And when it comes to tyres, size matters. I have 22s on my chassis now versus the more capable 18s/19s with thicker sidewall options you could actually use to climb a kerb.

Yes I can go over the traffic circle in certain places when I encounter someone who doesnt know how one works, but would I climb a high pavement in 22inch tyres with a sidewall as thick as a cellphone is thin? Nope. Not a chance.

And that my friends is where the conversation about this thing being an SUV is lost.
Its not a Hilux, Tank 300 or Fortuner competitor. Understand that dynamic and you understand what its limitations are.

@lebofa is selling a clean 1 owner G05
And it has no issues mentioned here. Oil change for the transfer case and diffs done, the car feels and drives like the first time I bought it. It is my first SUV and my first X5 so I can't compare it with previous models. The leather seats are still in good condition, no visible signs of wear and tear for a Seven year old car, no rattles or wind noise. The downside is that it is over the 70k km which OP is looking for. The tech in this car is very impressive, from the car driving its self, parking its self and talking to you. The air suspension takes the comfort in these cars to another level, long distance trips and driving on gravel roads are more enjoyable.
