Welcome to the Build Thread for our latest project, a BMW X5 3.0D

This one is quite the project, I have never seen a car in this condition before. Everytime I look at it I find something more to add to the build list.

Nonetheless, this project will truly display the power of detailing, extensive repair and showcase exactly what the Definitive Team can do.

I collected the car tonight, did a quick pass over and will compile the official list tomorrow and begin sourcing prices and build a timeline for the repairs.

A quick sneaky sneaky pic:

More pictures will be up tomorrow and then the fun begins!

:) post some more pics ..

Clutchy, you have not seen much yet. There is quite a lot to fix including a poor respray job. The carpets I fear may be unsalvageable. :thumbdo:

Lots of little bits and bobs missing, temp button, cigarette lighters etc.

Will update with a full list and pictures tomorrow.

Awesome! Will give you a shout tomorrow and we can discuss.

My concern are the burn marks in the floor, I fear we may end having to find a new carpet but heaven knows where from....

Alright, day one of the build and I am very concerned! There is so much to be done. :argh:

Off to go collect the new mag wheels and tyres, get quotes for repairs and check the cars history and service requirements at SMG.

Should be a fascinating day.

If you see my car at SMG, send my regards (in for service)!

Would be interested to see a sort of break-down of all the work that you have to do on this one!

What are you going to do with the old wheels? Am looking for a set of wheels for my X5 - had some problems with the tyre fitters damaging the rims.

BMW X5 3.0D | Project Info | Build List

Ladies and Gents, I have a build for you today! I will be running through the build list and showing you guys pictures of what needs restoring and what our plan of attack is for this BMW.

Some info on the car itself, it’s a BMW X5 (E53) 3.0D which was born in 2006 and now has 162 000km on the clock. The car itself is extremely well spec’d and drives like it is on air. Smooth, quiet and an immense amount of torque!

SAM_3855.jpg

The car arrived, literally as it had been purchased with the exception of its freshly tinted windows from Tint Express Montague Gardens:

SAM_3924.jpg

SAM_3925.jpg

The finish of the tint is exceptionally good, no bubbles, no gaps and almost impossible to notice with the exception of the glass being darker obviously.

Taking a quick walk around the X5 I realised we were in for quite a task, and so I produced the Project Build List:

- Replacing 4 mag wheels and tyres (Including Refurbishing in Anthracite)
- Respray front bumper (clear coat failure)
- Respray fenders and door panels due to clear coat failure and poor repairwork (pitting and fish eyes in paintwork)
- Repair & respray rear bumper and bootlid due to scratches through paintwork and onto metal as well as clearcoat failure.
- Respray both mirror caps.
- Repair/replace rear lower valence and PDC sensor mounting point.
- Replace all wiper blades on vehicle.
- Replace rear wiper screw cover (missing).
- Replace front windscreen.
- Polish/Compound Headlights and Foglights (Heavily oxidized).
- Replace silver trim on front bumper (Cracked and damaged) / Depends on budget.
- Redye interior leather and rebuild front seat bolsters.
- New Carpets.
- Regas Air conditioner & Run Klima Fresh through system.
- Replace 2x Xenon Bulbs
- Replace Rear Fog Lights
- Replace Steering Wheel
- Brake Line Error, overactive ABS system and pulling to left under braking.
- 4x4 TCS Warning Light remains on.
- Missing Cool temp Button
- Max Aircon Button not working
- Wrap, respray or try polishing wood trim on interior.
- Missing 2x Cigarette Lighters.
- Front and Rear Ashtrays missing parts.
- Purchase new Service books / Manual and have stamped up to date.
- Read and clear all DTC faults.
- Paintless Dent removal on almost every panel.
- Replace missing driver’s vanity mirror.
- Wheel Alignment and balancing
- Final Two Day Detail to finish off the project.

With an extensive list compiled, the owner and I discussed the way forward and as of yesterday the project is officially underway.

So let’s take a closer look at the items on the list above to get a better understanding of what is involved in this build.

The badly repaired fenders, notice the pitting and dull finish:

SAM_3861.jpg

Both mirror caps are scuffed and are being resprayed:

SAM_3865.jpg

Both the rear bumper and front bumper are in the same state, clear coat beginning to fail and excessive damage:

SAM_3867.jpg

The lower rear bumper damaged no doubt by its own attachable tow bar, missing the cover and a broken PDC mount. Anyone know of a place I can get a cheap replacement? Otherwise I am on the hunt!

SAM_3869.jpg

Over time the headlights have oxidized and become hazey, these will be wet sanded and polished to a high gloss. The blown bulbs will be replaced as currently none of Low Beams work.

SAM_3875.jpg

SAM_3876.jpg

The scratched and damaged windscreen:

SAM_3923.jpg

Moving on to the biggest part of this project for me, the interior. I do not know what was let loose in here or why it wasn’t contained but whatever it was has absolutely ruined a beautiful interior.

SAM_3880.jpg

SAM_3881.jpg

SAM_3886.jpg

SAM_3891.jpg

SAM_3892.jpg

SAM_3893.jpg

The plan is to have the leather redyed in the same colour, bolsters bought back to life and to remove all the seats so I can disinfect and try remove as much dirt and staining as possible. The actual leather has lifted so it isn’t just a matter of cleaning. The burn marks I have a plan for but don’t want to mention it just yet. :blab:

An extensive restoration on a mammoth car!

And so its starts | Bringing the beast back to life | Project kicks off

Besides the interior, a huge aspect of this build is restoring some sort of life to the exterior paintwork. In the photos you notice how glossy and rich it seems. However up close the paint tells you a different story.

The clearcoat failure on the bumper, scuffed mirrors and loads of dents, heavy marring and swirling ruin the finish beyond belief. There are circular scratches all over the car like someone was drawing smiley faces with a knife. Not to mention the bootlid which appears to have been cleaned with a scouring brush and thinners.

So my port of call was of course to visit my Repair Team at Dent Magic Express.

SAM_3899.jpg

They inspected the paintwork, counted over 10 dents with all panels affected and also inspected the car for previous spray work.

From there we decided to get going with the mag wheels which were supplied by the owner as the wheels on the car were buggered and the tyres were beyond being legal.

I dropped the mag wheels off at Wheelworx in Woodstock, with the instruction to repair and respray in what they term "Ferrari" anthracite.

Making use of the bakkie to transport the mags:

SAM_3910.jpg

This is the anthracite finish we are having the mag wheels sprayed in for collection on Saturday morning:

SAM_3909.jpg

To finish off, this morning I decided to check the cars electronic state, read faults and download the map.

Busy re-flashing the ECU Reader for this particular model:

SAM_3914.jpg

ECU Flasher plugged in and reading fault codes and clearing them:

SAM_3915.jpg

We decided we would also be mapping the X5, so next up I read the ECU File on the car which was mailed to our Tuning Team for the map to be tweaked for better performance and efficiency.

SAM_3921.jpg

The reading process took about 20 minutes; I cannot wait for the updated map to arrive!

With the day drawing to a close we stopped at this point and will continue yet again tomorrow.

We hope you will enjoy our build and should you have any questions please feel free to ask!

BMW X5 3.0D Build | Update 19/01/12

A quick update for all those following the build.

The X5 went in first thing this morning to BMW SMG to have its wheel alignment done as the steering wheel pointed left whilst driving straight.

They are also installing a brand new, custom steering wheel to the car and programming it for us.

Furthermore, I also ordered the leather dye today which is being sprayed tomorrow morning. :joy:

So some decent progress being made, tomorrow we tackle the carpets too! Expect some "interesting" photos soon!

BMW X5 3.0D | Update | Steering Wheel Change

Besides door handles and leather bolsters one of the worst wearing parts of your cars interior is the steering wheel.

This car was absolutely no exception. The original black colouring had worn off completely, and the leather had gone glossy and smooth from wear.

SAM_3883.jpg

With the new steering wheel ready and waiting we dropped the car off at BMW SMG to have it fitted and the alignment done. Take a look at the new steering wheel!

SAM_3946.jpg

Already the interior has been transformed, the car suddenly feels twice as good to drive and the new wheel is chunky and sporty.

Today we are tackling the leather and main interior! Wish us luck!

Are you going to sell some of the old stuff off the X5. That new steering wheel is superb! What about selling the old wheel? Will look very good on my car as i have the old "bus" type on at the moment and that old wheel will really do something for my car! Also, still waiting to hear what have you done with the old wheels as my mags were damaged by the tyre fitters and i am thinking of getting new secondhand wheels

@Mike: what is ur budget like for this project?

I was thinking of getting a similar spec'd X5 for the wife and dont mind spending some money to get it up to par if i get it for a good price, but am wondering what it may cost to get it to a good condition.

also, any idea what it costs to maintain these vehicles??

BMW X5 3.0D Build | Restoring the Interior | Major Update

Today really is quite a big update with us tackling the absolutely ruined interior of our BMW X5 Project.

The plan was to strip as much of the interior possible, restore and redye the leather seats as well as spend some time doing a deep cleanse on the interior carpets and boot.

Well, I knew the interior was in a state but I never realized it was this bad!

The day started off with me at a fellow fanatics place in Somerset West (Rick540) and we began stripping the interior... But first:

SAM_3949.jpg

From day one I noticed a rather unusual smell in the interior, when I say smell I mean you could smell it from outside the car. The kind of smell that lingered in your clothing afterwards, a harsh pungent smell which was truly disgusting.

Originally I couldn’t place the smell but then Rick hit a spot of genius recognizing the smell as that of Marijuana which led to us inventing a new scent called Dapple. Dagga & Apple Freshener. :biglol:

This led to much laughter and when the time came to remove the seats the smell was far too much for Rick.

SAM_3951.jpg

The picture below best sums up this interior:

SAM_3953.jpg

This was not just dirty, it was filthy. There was rice, corn, stained coke and stained blood all wedged in the carpeting. The car was a mess!

As we started pulling the interior apart we started a collection of assortments on the dash:

SAM_3955.jpg

Driver’s seat out, boot lining removed, general dismantling:

SAM_3959.jpg

SAM_3963.jpg

SAM_3983.jpg

Below is a walk around of the car mid dismantling to give you guys a better understanding of the level of dirt and grime in this car. Pictures truly are unable to give you a perspective.

The start of the video is actually "in car" Grafitti. The first bit says:

"Ady the Casanova was here"

The second bit is cruder with: "Yo Yo Mofo, Wazup".

:roflol:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="
" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

So, now onto the actual cleaning and restoration. :praise:

Rick started with the leather, taping up all plastic bits that could not be removed and giving the leather a thorough wipe down with thinners to remove any oils and residues.

He then continued to spray the leather with the new "Sahara Beige" blend we had made for the car. He layered this leaving a fresh look and spending lots of time on the smaller details.

SAM_3985.jpg

Meanwhile, outside I mixed a hectic concoction of Interior Fragrance, Vanish Carpet Cleaner, a touch of Maxi Suds for foaming power and Spot Cleaner into the water tank of the Genesis using hot water.

The results were astonishing.

SAM_4000.jpg

SAM_4004.jpg

SAM_4009.jpg

SAM_4013.jpg

Each section of carpet was cleaned at least 4 times pumping over 65 Litres of water into the X5's interior before being extracted. And even after the 4th pass there was still dirt being sucked out!

Inside, Rick was working on the bolster of the drivers seat which had collapsed from wear by adding new sponge and shaping it to the seat.

SAM_4019.jpg

With the day passing by, Rick focusing all his attention on the leather I started finishing up with the interior, returning all the plastic covers, clips and Alcantara before sitting back and grinning at the mammoth improvement.

Continued.

With my job done I spent some time watching the restoration of the interior and started up with some close ups of the ruined leather:

SAM_4048.jpg

SAM_4050.jpg

A quick 50/50 of the leather mid being sprayed, with the new dye at the bottom and old work finish on top.

With the day drawing to a close, we re-installed the seats before finishing up with supper and then calling it a day.

Blown away? Amazed at what can be achieved with effort and skill? Dont believe that is the same interior? Take a look at a final video I made the next morning:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="
" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The owner was absolutely blown away, I was absolutely blown away! :joy:

Thank you Rick once again for your help, the finish is perfect and the car smells great now. A mixture of Apple and fresh leather.

Many commented the car was completely beyond repair and I am glad we accepted that "Challenge".

So, what do you think?
