BMW X1 2013 E84 Crankshaft Pully Disintegrated

Hi All and Happy belated New Year!

I just wanted to get some insight and find out if this is an issue with this car or not.

I was driving the Mrs' car, slowly out a center thankfully, when I lost power steering and the battery / alternator light came on. Within the same 5 seconds I began seeing smoke coming from the bonnet.

I immediately turn the car off and pop the hood. It doesn't take long to see where everything is coming from. The crankshaft pully just decided to start breaking apart. There were pieces of rubber(?) that broke off and where smoking from the heat. It turns out that even though the belt was still around the pully, it couldn't make enough friction to turn the belt and instead turned against it which caused the power steering, alternator, etc to not turn.

I wasn't able to snap a picture when it happened due to it's location but it looked as if the middle of the pulley started breaking apart.

Is this an issue I didn't know about or am I just that special someone?

This is a very common issue on the diesel motors and should be changed at 150km as " preventative maintenance".

When my e46 320d's pulley failed the exact same happened.

It's a well known documented issue on the diesels. Had mine changed on the 320d as preventative maintenance last year, due to these deteriorating quite fast once they have some noticeable wear on them.

Mine didn't look bad at all, but it had a slight wobble, so glad I had it changed.

I’m at 166k on my 2012 2.0d, so technically on borrowed time.

Thanks to @KPM_330 I have an Oem pulley and will be done ASAP.

Is this specific to the 2.0d? Or 3.0d as well?

The pulley failure is on all 20d and 30d models, I'm not sure if this is still an issue on the F series cars but E series diesels it's a definate issue

Thanks for the feedback all, really didn't know about it.

The car is < 130 000kms but I guess the age factors in the difference.

Here's to hoping the warranty covers it!

Are there any other known issues with this motor or preventative maintenance I should do?

Would this be an issue to on the e70 X5 3.0D?

This is an issue to all BMW diesels AFAIK. Rather just inspect the X5's pulley for any cracks or damage and if the wear looks bad replace it before it breaks. I had my
330d's pulley replaced prematurely at 134xxxKM for peace of mind.

Yes, had to replace the crank dampener pulley on a F10 530d the other day. Broke into two pieces. Luckily, no damage though. Also lost the ac belt on my old E83 X3 2l diesel coming back from holiday with caravan in tow. Drove home and replaced the pulley which was still in one piece but with fractures all round and wobbling so much that the ac belt came off.

Wow that is quite something. So guess a good idea to add all pulleys (guess there are more than one - please excuse the ignorance - I am here to learn :)) to my list to have checked now when my car goes in for its last motorplan service?

You should definitely have the crank pulley checked, but it is highly unlikely that it would show any damage at 100k mileage.

Just thought I'd post an update.

I had the car towed to Menlyn Auto last week as my warranty dictates the car needs to be repaired at a dealership.

I phoned beforehand and got a quote on the part (R4545.12) and the labour (R1500) which is within the claim limit for the work category.

I got a call from the service advisor on Monday that the work required would total just under R15K. I was at a loss for words and told the advisor to email me the cost breakdown and call me back as I was in the middle of something at the office and, you know, have everything in writing.

Still have had no feedback on my request and have now phoned again to remind them as I am still without a car.

Anyone have some insight as to how they could have arrived at this price? They only additional item they mentioned on the phone was that they wanted to replace the belt too. When I looked at the belt prior to towing it away from my mechanic to the dealership, we were both in agreement that the belt was still looking good. Still, this should not affect the price anywhere close to this.

I'm tired and need another December.

Update:

As I pressed post, my phone rang with the service agent on the other side.

Apparently I was mistakenly quoted on the part and got my quote. Can someone with more knowledge than me please weigh in as I feel this isn't right.

@Cratix, I had my dampener replaced under warranty in October. My warranty limit was R4k, which is the cost of the dampener pulley + 4 bolts from ABM. I had to pay an additional R1k, which was the labour charge + VAT for just over an hour. Car only needed to be there for a day and a half.

The total cost of the entire job is R5k, add on another R1k (or less) for a new OEM belt and this should cost nothing more than R6k all in.. Unless there is some other damage that they have picked up?

Edit: those prices don't seem right and I am not sure if this was towed to a BMW dealership? If it isn't Auto Bavaria Midrand (ABM), then I would advise you go to any decent indy and have it fixed at what it should cost.

I see they have quoted for the deflection pulley and tensioner, check if these actually need to be replaced and if so, contact ABM for a quote and tell them you are a BMWFanatics member. Get a cost on all parts from them with the fanatics discount and take it from there.

This is a BMW dealership. Really should have gotten the quote in writing.

I saw your mention of ABM previously and Googled it without much luck but understand now its Auto Bavaria Midrand.

My cap for the warranty is R6k that's why I decided to take it to the dealer to avoid having to out of pocket it in January.

When it was at my mechanic, he looked at everything before hand for me and said it was only the dampener pulley.

Get a quote on parts from ABM and perhaps labour, then decide on the way forward. I understand that towing the car may cost more than the savings, of buying the parts from ABM and getting it fitted at Menlyn.

You stipulate what you want done and get it covered under warranty. I have to do my tensioner soon, but purposefully left it for a different claim.. Those 3 items should be 3 different claims.

@KPM_330 Thanks for the help bud, I really appreciate the time and advice.

I'm going to think it over this afternoon but I feel I'll most likely tow it and have it done there. I'd rather take a bit of a hit than pay a place trying to squeeze me.

No stress bud.

My advice is to contact the relevant persons at ABM and get some facts before you make a decision.. Here is the link to the numbers https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=91017&highlight=auto+bavaria+welcome
