ok , so im hoping this might give an indication which models was/is most prone to failure.. lumped the e90's in one, and did not add remapped to the mix, its already complicated..

this is also not representative of milage, failures on high milage cars is not really representative, but its a start..

Wow, I use to be very skeptical about 2nd hand diesels. I must say I am very impressed.

Might just lean towards upgrading to a 330d

2003 E39 530d had 226k km on when i replaced the turbo with a new turbo. Old one had a small piece broken off the exhaust vane but only made slight whisteling sound. Apart from the sound it still pulled like a train. Replaced the turbo before it did any damage. Upon taking it apart the bearing was like new with no play whatsoever. Was good for another 200k km!

2003 X5 3l diesel with 226k km still on original turbo and still going strong. No funny sounds from the turbo either.

Looks like the e90's the BMW engineers fixed the turbo issues and introduced door actuator failures.

I had a turbo fail on my VW Jetta TDi while still under mp.
When my TDi Syncro's engine fell to pieces I was also told that the turbo was at it's end..... so to me it seems that I at least know about one manufacturer that i will stay away from!

One day, I wish to own a 530d (early 2000 model will be fine)

We have a 2003 E46 330d with 405 000kms+ on the clock, the only major problem we've had with the car is the gearbox, had to change it 3 times, but manage to find second hand gearboxs and got the old ones refurbished. Also apparently in 2003 those gearboxes were made by GM and not BMW and the new ones are alot more sturdy and reliable.

I also have a 2006 E90 320d with 145 000kms on the clock. No issues other than the front passengers door actuator packed up, manage to get a second hand one. No other issues, *hold thumbs*.

:roflol: Haha, yes from what I've read it's quite a common problem, but i think a pair left and right from the dealership is only R800 and somehow if you just want one its R1700 if i remember correctly. I went with a secondhand one for R350, as i didnt want to buy left and right.
