Just to add my more recent experience I'm seeing that the facelift E46 320d's are proving to be very reliable with fairly minimal care.

Running in excess of 200k km comfortably with original turbo. And in several cases in excess of 300k km. And this is only abiding to the OBD service intervals. Which to me is way to few and far between...

i would add though, mainly through helping a few people with these since i started this thread (!specific! the facelift e46 320d)

heaven help you if you buy an abused/poor maintained example.. you will regret it. while this is a model that can be maintained for minimal outlay, it sure cant be repaired for minimal outlay. make sure if you are looking at one that you can verify the maintenance and condition..

other than that you are fine..

sorry andy , just yin to the yang :) seeing as my experience with these have also grown.. i have been shocked lately by how people maintain turbo diesels..

Unable to vote - My car model isn't an option,

2008 BMW X3 E83 2.0d Manual - 150 000km. No failure - took turbo apart during the head gasket change - perfect condition - no missing pieces, bearings have no play - happy Owner!

had a 2004 330d F/L - Turbo failed after about 7k km iirc, Replaced turbo and it popped again shortly after due to manufacture defect apparently. Fixed that and sold the car.

Gearbox also went and I converted it to a manual.

Difference is that your car was modded IIRC...

Anywho... My E60 530d hit 210k km today. Original Turbo. Gearbox never been touched. Smooth as silk still

2003 E53 X5 3l diesel no turbo failures when i sold it at plus minus 240k kms.
2006 E60 530d no turbo failures when i sold it at 180k kms
2005 E85 X3 2l diesel no turbo failures that i know of now at 170k kms
2009 E60 530d no turbo failures that i know of now at 161k kms
2002 E46 F/L 320d (son's car) got the car on 156k kms with turbo whisteling like police siren. Replaced the (solid) toilet paper type filter with uprated one and sold the car at 229k kms. Turbo actually making less noise now!!
2002 E46 F/L 330d (other son's car) also no turbo failures that we are aware of. Sold it on 229k kms iirc.
2005 E53 X5 iirc turbo was replaced under warranty. Got the car on 150k kms and sold it to my son at 190k kms. Pulls like a train!
All of the above have had their loo type filters replaced with either new type or removed completely. Both the E60's have had no filter in whatsoever!!! Just the empty casing with nothing inside. I since have removed my X3's filter altogether as well.
Have had to replace the crankshaft dampener pulley on both the E46 320d and now my 2l diesel X3. Know that the pulley on the 2005 X5 was replaced shortly before i bought it. Please check your pulleys. I have now bought a 3/4 inch drive T-handle and socket to remove the pulley bolt. Also made a lock to stop the flywheel from moving when removing the bolt. It is very tight!!
