when i bought my car i just walked into SMG with the vin on a piece of paper and they gave me the details no problem...

I just said im looking at buying this car and i would like to see what im getting...

If they getting sticky tell whoever you buying from to write you a letter so you can get the history...

Thats exactly how i did it, so if all else fails, go through SMG. :)

Was yours through a dealer or private?

it was from a non bmw dealer...

I had an email from a BMW dealer saying that my 2010 E92 had R40 000 repairs done to the body, new door, hinges and suspension parts.

They are awaiting my payment ,because the insurance was not up to date.

I emailed them the details as to when I had sold the car..Dec 2010.

It appears that the second owner refused to pay the fee from BMW regarding change of owners. They charge R 1500 to do a complete check and paperwork.

They apologised and took my name of the system.

Hey Man, yeah i also discovered this and this has started a few months back only. Its something about the privacy act or something. I have however managed to establish a relationship with a BMW service guy over the years and he then checks for me quickly to verify any comments, mileage etc.

I just emailed one BMW dealership in Cape Town and asked them to send me a screen shot of the comments section for my car, I got reply in less than 10 minutes, wasnt asked for the vehicle registration doc. See below

At my new job the whole company uses Macs, so thats going to be a change.

Damn.

dealers probably have to run IE due to the activex controls used by their SAP or whatever webapps

Yikes - I really seemed to open up a can of worms here !

What I can tell you all is that I have subsequently sent off 2 similar querries to BMW and have got the necesary info back from them, no problem. So it seems localised to one incident.

I agree that the private info of the owners, ID numbers, address etc etc should remain private and is no business of the buyers. That said I'm sure we all agree that the ID / age of the previous owner is a nice to have to get an idea of how the vechile has been driven.

What I have a problem with BMW SA only allowing the current owner to supply me with service history, that can't trusted as like I mentioned previously it can be edited. If you put your car up for sale, you shouldn't have a problem with potential buyers asking BMW for this info. Maybe BMW should have a form that the seller needs to complete and lodge with them allowing this access ?

I support BMW not supplying vehicle information to any non-owner.
It is my car, my property, and therefore has nothing to do with anyone else.

If I supply the history which I recieved from bmw, and you think I am dodgy and have changed it, then walk away

Should one be able to give a hospital an ID number and they then give you a medical history?

Agreed 100%.

If you are a serious buyer, sure I'll provide the history.

But then it can also be ask how do you know they are serious?:fencelook:

It's a touchy subject cleary, with pros and cons for both view points. The unfortunate reality in SA, not limited to the motor industry only, is that you have to be very very careful when parting with your hard-earned cash.

I support BMW not supplying vehicle information to any non-owner.
You are entitled to your opinion.

Agreed - unless you are selling it and posted it in the public domain, or the obvious response why, what are you hidding ?

If I supply the history which I recieved from bmw, and you think I am dodgy and have changed it, then walk away.
A sad reality is that a large % of car dealers out there "dodgy" spend a little on this forum and others, let alone hellopeter etc and you'll realise how serious this problem is.

Should one be able to give a hospital an ID number and they then give you a medical history?
Really, seriously - can you even compare the two ?????

honestly what are you going to do with someones MP history? sell it so some Nigerians...

i really dont see how you can be harmed by bmw giving out the details unless they include your contact details on the sheet..

+1 and -1

I can't think of any reason either but that doesn't mean there isn't one. The fact remains, the information is personal and should not be divulged without the owner's consent. That way things are just kept clean without any complications.

why not, both are personal info that below to that person

but maybe you arent actually asking a question, and stating a fact, then you need to qualify why you say you cant compare the two

I agree with Kabal about not giving out the info

In a hospital scenario, you aren't actually purchasing anything, so can you compare the 2?

Personal info is personal info, and should not be divulged without the owner's consent.

If I receive a kidney I really would like to know where it's been and how it was serviced.......

1stly, if you need a kidney, you wont care where its from, you will just be happy that there is one available.

2ndly, they don't tell you who and where the donor is from.
