Will never buy brand new...seriously, what's the point?

some people want that experience of buying a BRAND new car.. sumtimes the demand is so high that its cheaper to buy new with a discount then a 2nd hand..

but I would wait and get a 2nd hand car almost always, with all those yummy extras at no additional cost..

A friend of mine bought a new (B7) Audi A4 1.8T with almost all the bells and whistles for R360k in '09 and went on and on about the joys of brand new ownership. The novelty wore off miles ago, he's being offered next to nothing in Trade-in, his settlement with the bank is tens of thousands higher than the closest offers for the car...imagine how he's going to feel if/when things start going wrong with the car...

Demos and 1-2 year old models seem to be best value for money especially in times when we should be prudent with our spending. 10 year old BMWs are even better

There is no better feeling as a petrol head than to drive your new car off the showroom floor. And then there is no worse feeling when you try to trade it.

The joys of owning a car.

My self now only buy older cars. Thats the only way I get bang for buck.

However its funny to listen to the salesmen when they start with the reasoning behind the poor resell value.

If you have a diesel they say "but if it was a petrol" and vica versa.

If you have a auto its "but if it was a manual" we all now how it goes.

I could write a book about it.

Maybe we should start a thread about excuses when it comes to salesmen.

Not entirely true - I tried this and would have lost 70k within two months - see previoius post

fact is, it happens with most car brands, some worse than others. Also, if you try and trade a car in, in less than 2 years of ownership you gona feel it. Keep in mind that you have hardly paid back most of the principal debt, as most of the money goes towards interest, new or 2nd hand.

If you buy new, you loose a crap load of money the minute yo udrive off the floor, and it will go at about 15% per year.

A car starts depreciating a little less after 3 years.

Buy 2nd hand, older than 3 years and you will still feel the loss in value, although a little less, keep in mind that you then have an older car, and might be close or out of maintenance plans and if you dont have the know-how, its gona cost you. After motorplan you will get about R2.50 for it.

Best in my opinion is to go 1 or 2 year old cars, with low mileage, and you score on extra's. Then keep it at least two to three years.

moral of the story is, cars is not an asset but a liability, you going to loose money, no matter what route you take.
