BMW parts prices....again!

So I bought another BMW and I'm phoning for prices and getting all fired up again and hot under the collar about it.

A front crank seal for an E34 M5 R512.00, ok fine, so I go down to the local parts place and find a German made seal EXACTLY the same R23.00.

Screw this!!!

Where do they get off with a 2200% markup. Every time I source the same OEM part without the BMW logo it's minimum 1000% difference.

So I get a friend in North America to get some prices from a BMW dealer there, all of a sudden the stuff is reasonable.

Is this a BMW South Africa specific thing they they can keep on doing because you guys never complain and just pay what they ask and just let them get away with it or what?

I seriously get the impression BMW SA do not want any BMW older than 10 years kept on the road.

reminds me of when I looked for new rear bumper mounts. BMW wanted R1100 each and I ended up buying both at cliftons for only R120

It makes me so the moer in.....

They sic their lawyers on anybody selling "BMW parts" all the time but nobody can afford to buy the genuine thing.

I still love the brand because I now know this mentality is not comming out of Germany, seems to be local. But then what did I honestly expect in the South African tradition.

Problem is complaining is not going to help, cause this is SA, which means you can do whatever the hell you want.

Ja consumer protection act se gat! What protection? doesn't mean anything actually as vendors will do what they want anyway.

Mentality....A few years ago the BMW dealers in the UK brought down prices on parts for older cars this was good news for the dealers as turnover climbed and a lot of cars were being better maintained .

Exactly, SA has some wonderful laws and acts, but the problem come with the application, or the lack thereof at least.

I got a quote for my front crank seal on the Sorento for R173+VAT from the dealer. Went to Bearingman and got it for R50something plus VAT.

That I can handle as it reasonably about covers the R50 seal being packaged specially and kept as dealer stock with a reasonable margin for the dealer's effort.

I wish I could buy milk, print a BMW logo on the bottle and sell it for R500 a liter...... EXACTLY the same concept.

The thing is I think that all dealers are now following the example set by BMW, but BMW is still the king of unreasonable prices, let that not be forgotten.

I asked for a price on engine mounts for my E36 M3 today .....local BMW = R1136 each :thumbdo: ....Realoem = $77.00

Polymounts from a supplier in USA = $150.00 for 2 exckuding shipping. Even if I add shipping it's cheaper then buying locally
