Hi All,

I'm currently driving a mk1 golf, my previous cars were also vws. I'm saving up to buy an E36 325i or 328i and came here to learn all about these cars. Hopefully when I get one I will be able to contribute useful stuff to the forum and help other members :)

Thanks Teezy.

My first mk1 a few years ago was a 1500, had a 2lt put in and that was quite fast. The one I'm driving right now is a stock 1800 Sport with a freeflow. I like the mk1 but I want something with better suspension and more power without needing to do too many mods. I like the look of the E36 and I find both the front and back seats comfortable as well as the ride. Also, I like how BMW sort of angles everything in the dash towards the driver and the quality of the materials that they use for their interiors are way better than other cars in the same price range from the same era. I also think an E36 will be cheaper for me to maintain than an E46 (I like those too).

Thanks Maljan, appreciate it :)

Just had a thought. The speed freaks all want the 328i and the outoppies love the 323i. Who would you rather buy a used car from? :=):

Thanks Hugo.

Dewald that thread is perfect, I've bookmarked it so that I can print snippets from it and take a checklist with me.

Maljan that's a good thought... It would be awesome if I could find an outoppie with a 328i instead if a 323i!!!

Does the 323i have a 2.5 engine like the 325i?

AFAIK the E36 323i uses the newer M52 engine while the 325i uses the M50. Both are 2.5l motors, but later M52s were upgraded to have dual-vanos. The 323i is less powerful when compared to the 325i though (125kw vs 141kw).

Some of the missing kW in the 325i can probably be made to reappear by chipping. Camshaft profiles etc. might work against that, I don't know. Perhaps somebody can fill us in on that. Torque is exactly the same FWIW.

The 323i was actual!y detuned for marketing reasons to create space for the 328i. Tooling up for a 2.3 would have been too expensive I suppose. Even the 328i was held back to 142kW to keep it underneath some German tax threshold.

Wouldn't the 328i or older 325i be better (and cheaper to fix) because it only has single vanos? Would it be easier to tune/remap the ecu on a single vanos (for small mods like exhaust, cold air induction) when compared to dual vanos?

So that means that you could get the same power of a 325i without any other hardware modifications by just chipping/flashing the ecu with the 325i or similar maps?

Probably yes, but the cam profiles and other things might be different between the two engines. Meaning that you might get more power, but not quite get 141kW, out of a 323i. According to the interwebs, the intake manifolds differ and fitting the one from the M50 to the M52 will add some power. Is there somebody here who has tried souping up a 323i?

BTW it is not possible to make a factually correct sentence with "VANOS" and "cheap to fix" in it. :(
