BMW M3 GT2 RC Car - The Build

Good Morning All

So after a 5 long months I have finally been reunited with my BMW and although it is a RC Car I figured I would get a thread up showing the build etc etc of the car.

Some basic Information:

Chassis - Entry Level TT01
Drive - 4WD with diffs
Standard Price - R3500 for car, battery, remote, charger and server.

Alright so its a bit of a nasty price to pay for a car but I bought it when I had far too much disposable income.

Plans:

The first immediate plan is to rebuild the car. It hasnt been used in a while and everything needs a good going over. Then a tyre upgrade and fitting for the first time since buying it in 6 months the new BMW M3 GT2 body in white.

Other upgrades include metal ball bearings, Heat sink with fan, uprated high speed motor, uprated ECU, Carbon Fibre body, Uprated Drive Shaft, Uprated front struts as well as oil filled, adjustable shocks.

Why?

Well I enjoy toys and this is a fantastic toy to have. It is a very expensive hobby and has already cost me a lot of money. I dont necessary want to race the car but might consider it.

The main reason is because yesterday I crashed it and had an accident with the gate which caused a rear right axle to snap in half and cracked the old Mercedes Benz DTM body I have.

Alright... So a taster for now. Will start working on her and get some pics up tonight.

Alrighty.

The pic above is the car and cover. The cover still needs some work but is close to finished. As you can see there is no right wheel as it snapped the axle..

So first off was the shocks:

And then I cleaned those and replaced the oil inside with new oil:

Done:

Next off were the rear wheels joints and remaining axles. These were cleaned and dashed with some lube:

Then I removed the rear Diff and covers leaving me with this:

As you can see it was a bit messy.

The actual diff and its components was removed and dipped in Brake and Parts Cleaner. Then refitted with another dash of lube:

The remainder of the electronics and engine were then swiftly removed:

And as my car and table looks at present:

I still have a loooong way to go. Thats all for tonight. Will probably finish it off tomorrow and then start with the front diff.

Awesome car dude! where do you race? You have alot more mods there then i do, That a TT-01 Chassis rite?

What are those foam things you have on the side?

I have a E30 M3 same chassis,I just love racing this thing,Haven't raced my car in years though. If yr in Durban i hear theres a big race coming up this weekend at South way mall .
Id post a pic of my car but not sure how to do it here.

Nice work, Mike. I still have a 1:8 scale McLaren from my dad, so you guessed it, that thing is 35+ years old. It had all the components, dual wishbone suspension, shocks, diff etc like yours, but only all in metal and brass fabricated parts...

i also got a tt01 it has a nissan gtr body for now...
made mine RWD thou
ive been trying to find an easy way to convert the open diff to lsd by changing the internals a bit its tricky
i need to get a decent motor and some better batteries

the way i see it is id rather make mistakes with this car because they easier to fix

Nice toys guys...! I used to race these regionally! To get your diffs locked up, simply open the casing and fill it up with hot glue!

ill try that on the front diff i dont need anymore i just thought it would be awesome to make a real lsd...

Be carefull on locking your front diff. You will only be able to race on a very smooth surface as the car will
react to all the bumps by turning from side to side. I was racing a superstock front wheel drive and i was using an adjustable front diff wich i modified to be very tight. Was not able to control the car on the back straight as it
was swerving from side to side when i hit small bumps. If you do lock it, lock it in such a way that you can reverse your doings. The best of these RC cars are the fact that you can play arround with all of these to adj. performance. NJOY.

i can see what you saying about a locked diff you dont realise how ruff surfaces are for the scale of these cars.
i have also been thinking of using something like corn flower/water mix (you get oils that do the same thing) to make a new type of diff that gives more power to the wheel that has to most pressure on it but it gets very complicated quickly...

If you want something where the diff can be adjusted for amount the of slip, you can buy it off the shelf, its a racing "BALL DIFF"....Should be available at your hobby shop.

Yeah, used to run nationals in 10th scale electric RC, was a shop manager at an RC store for my first job.
If you get the hop-up mod Ball Diffs from the rc store then when you build it you can set the amount of lock-up by how much you tighten the centre screw.
